As a lifeguard, you’ll help create a safe and welcoming place where families and community members come to swim, relax, and have fun.


What You’ll Do

Working under the Aquatics Supervisor, you will:

  • Keep watch over swimmers and help enforce pool safety rules

  • Recognize unsafe situations and respond quickly to prevent accidents

  • Help educate patrons about pool safety and facility guidelines

  • Monitor locker rooms, observation areas, and sun deck spaces

  • Assist with cleaning duties including the pool, deck areas, locker rooms, and surrounding spaces

  • Help maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming facility

  • Attend required trainings and practice emergency response skills

  • Follow City safety rules and maintain confidentiality when needed

  • Help with additional aquatics or recreation tasks as assigned

Qualifications

The knowledge, abilities, and physical requirements listed below are necessary to successfully perform the essential duties of this position. Employees must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform these functions, with or without reasonable accommodation, and may use mechanical or adaptive devices when appropriate.

Knowledge Of:

  • Lifeguarding procedures and safety techniques

  • Basic swimming pool operations

Ability To:

  • Communicate clearly, professionally, and respectfully with coworkers, supervisors, and members of the public

  • Use sound judgment and decision-making skills in routine and emergency situations

  • Adapt to changing situations, new procedures, and unexpected challenges

  • Successfully pass all required skills testing to maintain American Red Cross Lifeguard and CPR-PR certifications

  • Represent the Sterling Recreation Center and the City of Sterling in a positive and professional manner
