Position Summary

The Lifeguard Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality lifeguard certification and recertification courses in accordance with established American Red Cross standards and organizational safety requirements. This position provides instruction, skill demonstration, participant evaluation, and course documentation while maintaining a safe and effective learning environment. The Lifeguard Instructor is expected to consistently apply certification standards, provide clear and constructive instruction, and ensure participants demonstrate the required knowledge and skills before successfully completing a course.

Essential Functions

  • Plan, prepare for, and deliver assigned lifeguard certification and recertification courses in accordance with current American Red Cross standards and curriculum.
  • Provide clear instruction and accurate demonstrations of required lifeguarding, rescue, CPR/AED, and First Aid skills.
  • Evaluate participant performance throughout training and consistently apply established course completion and certification requirements.
  • Provide participants with appropriate practice opportunities, coaching, and constructive feedback to support skill development.
  • Recognize and correct improper techniques and reinforce safe and effective lifeguarding practices.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and professional learning environment during all classroom and in-water training activities.
  • Communicate course expectations, safety requirements, and instructions clearly and professionally to participants.
  • Enforce applicable pool rules, safety procedures, and course requirements.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, course completion, certification, and other required training records.
  • Ensure appropriate equipment and training materials are available, properly maintained, and safely used during courses.
  • Identify and immediately report unsafe conditions, equipment concerns, incidents, or other safety issues to the appropriate manager.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and aid within the scope of current training and certification.
  • Work collaboratively with Aquatics leadership and other team members to support safe and effective aquatics operations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor (LGI) certification required.
  • Current CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers certification from an approved certifying organization, including the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or American Safety & Health Institute, as applicable.
  • Current First Aid certification from an approved certifying organization, including the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or American Safety & Health Institute, as applicable.
  • Previous experience delivering lifeguard certification or recertification courses preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of current lifeguarding, water safety, emergency response, CPR/AED, and First Aid practices.
  • Ability to clearly demonstrate, explain, observe, and evaluate required lifeguarding skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to provide instruction and feedback in a patient, professional, and constructive manner.
  • Ability to consistently enforce established safety and certification standards.
  • Ability to maintain accurate course and participant documentation.

Job/Work Environment

  • Work is performed in and around indoor and/or outdoor aquatic environments and classroom settings.
  • Regular exposure to water, humidity, wet or slippery surfaces, pool chemicals, elevated noise levels, and varying temperatures.
  • Ability to enter and exit the pool, swim, tread water, and demonstrate required lifeguarding and rescue techniques.
  • Ability to demonstrate and perform CPR, First Aid, and other emergency response skills consistent with the requirements of the position.
  • Ability to remain alert and visually and audibly monitor participants during instructional activities.
  • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and frequently bend, reach, kneel, crouch, push, and pull while performing instructional and rescue-related activities.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently.
  • Ability to assist with moving or supporting individuals during training or emergency situations using appropriate techniques, equipment, and additional assistance when necessary.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Work schedules may vary based on course and operational needs and may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
