JOB DESCRIPTION:

LIFEGUARD

JOB SUMMARY:

The Full-Time Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of all patrons using the indoor aquatic facility. This role requires strong surveillance skills, prompt emergency response, and consistent enforcement of facility rules. In addition, the position includes responsibilities related to water chemistry testing, basic mechanical knowledge of pool systems, and general facility upkeep.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties that may be performed.)

Patron Safety & Surveillance

  • Maintain constant and vigilant supervision of the pool and surrounding deck areas.
  • Recognize and respond quickly and effectively to all emergencies.
  • Enforce all facility rules, regulations, and safety standards with professionalism and consistency.
  • Perform rescues, provide first aid and CPR/AED care as needed.

Facility Operations & Maintenance

  • Conduct routine water chemistry tests (e.g., chlorine, pH, alkalinity) and document results according to facility standards.
  • Perform basic adjustments to pool chemicals and relay any irregularities to the supervisor on duty.
  • Assist in monitoring and operating mechanical systems including pumps, filters, heaters, and chemical feeders.
  • Help maintain a clean and safe environment by completing daily opening/closing duties, deck cleaning, and restroom checks.

Customer Service & Administrative Support

  • Provide courteous and professional assistance to patrons, answering questions, and addressing concerns.
  • Assist with incident/accident reports and maintain accurate records.
  • Support aquatic programs, swim lessons, and special events as assigned.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum age 18 (or as required by local regulations).
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks, including water rescues and heavy lifting.
  • Strong observational and communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of pool chemistry and mechanical operations preferred; training provided.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to see, hear, and respond to emergencies quickly.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to swim, tread water, and perform rescues in deep water.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Indoor aquatic environment with high humidity and noise levels.
  • Frequent standing, walking, climbing, and exposure to water and pool chemicals.
  • Must be available for a varied schedule including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
