Oversee pool safety, enforce rules, and respond to emergencies as a certified lifeguard at a community YMCA facility.

General Function

The lifeguard is responsible for upholding safety rules, Y policies, accident prevention and emergency response at YMCA pools.

Job Responsibilities

  • All lifeguards must remain physically and mentally alert, taking a proactive approach to searching for distressed swimmers and hazards.
  • Successfully communicate with youth and adults to enforce rules and schedules.
  • Give clear directions in case of emergency.
  • Keep schedule availability up to date. Report for duty with proper with proper lifeguarding uniform.
  • Activate EAP when necessary.
  • Maintain safety of pool environment by removing any hazards that could lead to injury in and around the pool and pool deck.
  • Maintain chemical logs.
  • Mandatory in-service training attendance required.
  • Lifeguards must remain physically capable of completing the prerequisite swim test as prescribed by the American Red Cross to ensure ability to respond to emergencies.
