Lifting & Rigging Subject Matter Expert (SME)

About the position

Solvexis Consult is looking for an experienced Lifting & Rigging Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support a major construction project.

As the project’s technical specialist for lifting and rigging, you will help ensure that lifting activities are properly planned, reviewed and executed safely. You will provide specialist guidance to the project team, contractors and subcontractors and support compliance with applicable legislation, project procedures and recognized industry practice.

The role requires extensive practical and technical experience with lifting operations on large construction or industrial projects.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Acting as the project’s subject matter expert for lifting, rigging and crane-related activities.
  • Developing, reviewing and maintaining project procedures and minimum requirements for lifting operations.
  • Reviewing lift plans, risk assessments, method statements and supporting technical documentation.
  • Assessing routine, non-routine, complex and critical lifting operations.
  • Reviewing crane selection, load charts, lifting radius, capacity utilization and equipment configuration.
  • Verifying load information, including weight, dimensions, center of gravity and lifting points.
  • Reviewing rigging arrangements, lifting accessories and equipment selection.
  • Assessing crane positioning, ground conditions, outrigger loads and required ground support in cooperation with the relevant engineering disciplines.
  • Ensuring that exclusion zones, communication methods and responsibilities are clearly defined before lifting begins.
  • Confirming that lifting equipment and accessories have valid certification, inspections and identification.
  • Reviewing the competence and documentation of crane operators, riggers, signalers, lifting supervisors and other personnel involved in lifting operations.
  • Supporting contractor and subcontractor evaluations related to lifting competence and performance.
  • Participating in planning meetings, constructability reviews, pre-lift meetings and toolbox talks.
  • Conducting site inspections and audits of lifting and rigging activities.
  • Identifying unsafe conditions, procedural deviations and technical risks and ensuring that these are addressed.
  • Supporting coordination between construction, logistics, engineering, HSE and commissioning teams.
  • Advising the project on simultaneous operations and interfaces that may affect lifting activities.
  • Supporting investigations of lifting-related incidents and near misses and communicating lessons learned.
  • Maintaining clear records and reporting lifting-related risks, observations and required actions to project management.
  • Reviewing and approving lifting documentation when formally authorized to do so by the project.

Qualifications and experience

We expect that you have:

  • A relevant technical, engineering, crane, rigging or construction background.
  • Extensive documented experience with lifting and rigging operations on large construction or industrial projects.
  • Previous experience as a lifting specialist, appointed person, lifting manager, lift planner, lifting supervisor or equivalent.
  • Strong knowledge of cranes, rigging equipment, lifting accessories and safe lifting practices.
  • Experience developing and reviewing lift plans, risk assessments and method statements.
  • The technical ability to review load information, crane configurations, load charts and rigging arrangements.
  • Knowledge of equipment certification, inspection and traceability requirements.
  • Strong understanding of HSE requirements associated with lifting operations.
  • The confidence and experience to challenge unsafe or technically inadequate lifting arrangements.
  • Strong communication and coordination skills.
  • Professional working proficiency in English.

Relevant lifting-planning or appointed-person qualifications recognized in the project’s jurisdiction will be an advantage. The precise certification requirements will depend on the project location and client requirements.

Experience from major pharmaceutical, energy, infrastructure, data-centre or other technically complex construction projects will also be an advantage.
