About this role
What we're looking for
We need someone with 2–6 years of litigation paralegal experience in a law firm who has a solid working knowledge of Texas state and federal court rules, filing procedures and litigation deadlines. You should be comfortable handling several matters and competing deadlines at once in a busy, collaborative litigation and bankruptcy practice. You should also have a track record of supporting cases from start to finish, including discovery, e-filing and trial preparation. Bonus points if you have hands-on Everlaw or other e-discovery experience, a paralegal certification, or onsite trial support experience.
What you'll do-
Support attorneys through every phase of litigation, from case intake and investigation through discovery, trial and appeal, across Vela Wood's litigation and bankruptcy matters in the Austin office.
-
Own case management and docketing: keep case files, calendars, deadlines and dockets accurate so every assignment is on time and meets court requirements.
-
Draft, proofread, format and prepare pleadings, motions, subpoenas, discovery requests and other legal documents for attorney review. Electronically file them in Texas state and federal courts under the applicable rules.
-
Manage discovery and evidence: collect, review, organize and produce documents using Everlaw and other litigation support tools. Maintain electronic and physical case files, exhibits and correspondence.
-
Do legal research and summarize case materials, including discovery responses, deposition transcripts and other key documents, so attorneys have what they need.
-
Lead preparation for depositions, hearings, mediations and trials: schedule, prepare exhibits, and build trial notebooks, exhibit lists and witness materials. Provide onsite trial support and travel as needed.
-
Work closely with attorneys at every level (from equity partners to associates) and coordinate with clients, witnesses, experts, vendors, opposing counsel and court staff.
Why Vela Wood
-
A boutique firm with only four equity partners, so you get direct access to leadership and colleagues who know you by name.
-
A people-first culture built on one rule: "above all else, be a good human." Vela Wood values your personal time and pays you for all the time you work. Hours rise around trials and deadlines and then ease off, and you'll never be expected to work Big Law hours.
-
Firm-paid medical, dental and vision, a 401(k) match, paid parental leave, firm-paid legal training and CLE, and the firm-subsidized summer work-abroad program (past trips: Montreal, Portugal, Spain, Mexico and Denmark).
-
A new role created by growth: the litigation team has more work than people.
Work setup: In-office at the Austin office about 4 days a week at first, with the option to move to about 3 days a week once you're settled in.
