JOB SUMMARY: The Locomotive Engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of locomotives within the railyard. This position ensures compliance with all safety regulations, conducts equipment inspections, and works closely with yard personnel to coordinate train movements. A successful candidate will possess strong situational awareness, mechanical knowledge, and the ability to make critical decisions while operating locomotives in a fast-paced environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operate locomotives to transport railcars within the railyard and ensure safe movement per operational guidelines and procedures.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections on locomotives, ensuring all mechanical components are in proper working order.
- Interpret and follow train orders, signals, and railroad rules and regulations.
- Communicate effectively with yard personnel, dispatchers, and supervisors to coordinate safe and efficient rail movements.
- Monitor speed, air brakes, and other locomotive functions to ensure safe operation.
- Identify and report mechanical issues, malfunctions, or safety concerns to maintenance personnel.
- Adhere to all safety protocols, including FRA (Federal Railroad Administration) regulations and company policies.
- Assist in coupling and uncoupling railcars as needed, using hand signals or radio communication.
- Maintain accurate records of locomotive operations, inspections, and any incidents occurring during shifts.
- Ensure compliance with hazardous materials handling guidelines when transporting such cargo.
