Summary
Pilot large vessels in and out of Liberia’s Buchanan port, overseeing safe STS transfers and ensuring compliance with maritime regulations and safety protocols.
- Pilotage & Vessel Handling: Safely maneuver vessels during berthing and unberthing, at the DSO and MPQ berths. Conduct pre-arrival and pre-transfer risk assessments.
- Execute safe vessel maneuvers and ensure safe navigation of vessels engaged in STS double-banking operations at Buchanan Anchorage, with the assistance of tugs, mooring boats, and terminal support resources
- Maintain full control and situational awareness of vessel speed, heading, and position while transiting the port approach channel.
- Assess and adjust maneuvers based on wind, swell, current, tidal height, visibility, under-keel clearance, and berth configuration.
- STS Operations: Oversee mooring arrangements, fender positioning, and hose connection for tanker vessels and cargo transfer. Ensure compliance with OCIMF guidelines and port authority requirements.
- Safety & Regulatory Compliance: Enforce safety protocols and emergency response plans. Verify documentation (checklists, permits, cargo transfer plans).
- Operational Coordination: Liaise with ship Masters, STS service providers, and port control. Maintain effective communication during operations.
- Reporting & Continuous Improvement: Prepare operation reports and incident logs. Recommend improvements to enhance safety and efficiency.
- Provide support as Port Captain, in addition to pilotage and STS operations, by coordinating with inbound and outbound vessels and the terminal to ensure arrival and departure formalities are streamlined.

- Deliver maximum support during vessel loading to prevent delays, thereby enhancing berth occupancy, and perform any other work that may be deemed necessary and safe by the employer.

Qualifications / Experience / Technical Knowledge:
- Education: STCW-compliant certification; Advanced Ship Handling or Bridge Resource Management training.
- Licenses: Valid Marine Pilot License issued by the relevant Port Authority; GMDSS certification; Oil/Chemical/Gas tanker familiarization (if applicable)
- Experience: Minimum 5–7 years of sea-going experience as Master or Chief Officer on tankers; At least 3 years as a licensed Marine Pilot with STS operations exposure.
- Master Mariner Certificate of Competency (Unlimited).
- Other Requirements: Medical fitness certificate; Proficiency in English (spoken and written).
