TRIUMF’s student program typically hires ~40 students each term from across all disciplines who hang together socially and professionally during the term, and beyond.   • Brief Summary
    • Perform a feasibility study and develop tools for use of AI or machine learning to assist with predictive and preventative maintenance on Power Supplies (and other systems), possibility to progress to early development of machine learning algorithms
  • Key Responsibilities
    • Analysis of data available with current control systems and what live vs historical can be obtained from work permits, elogs, etc.
    • Develop a system that processes historical maintenance records and creates a standardised database of equipment failures, symptoms, causes and repairs
    • Develop a system that records live data specifically that is critical to track equipment performance
    • Create a dashboard to present data and highlight anomalies
    • Research into possible machine learning or AI tools that could be developed for the data available, create a proof-of-concept for the feasibility of such a project
    • Possibility to extend to development of machine learning algorithms
  • Learning Outcomes
    • Gain hands-on experience with control systems and data acquisition, including EPICS and power electronics sensor systems such as DCCTs and power meters.
    • Develop practical experience in data analysis, machine learning, and AI-assisted data processing, with an opportunity to investigate emerging tools and techniques for industrial preventative and predictive maintenance.
    • Gain experience working with real-world engineering data, including equipment performance data, historical fault reports, maintenance records, and work permits.
    • Gain exposure to the operation, monitoring, troubleshooting, and maintenance of high-power DC power conversion systems in a large research facility.
    • Develop experience applying emerging technologies to a practical engineering problem, including identifying equipment anomalies and investigating methods for predicting potential equipment failures.
    • Opportunity to contribute to a technical presentation at a Power Converters conference focused on the application of AI and machine learning to preventative and predictive maintenance
  • Qualifications
    • Engineering background in electrical or computer engineering, or machine learning/neural networks
    • Data analysis
    • Python and web development would be helpful for HLA dashboard development
    • Machine Learning or AI development experience would be a plus

Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and ranges from $ 2815 to $ 4238 per month including 4% vacation pay.
