We're hiring a Maintenance Engineer to support the reliability, safety, and performance of critical electrical power systems across our operations. In this role, you will provide technical leadership in protection and control systems, power system studies, asset reliability, and project execution. Minimum Requirements:

  • 5 to 7 years of related experience with transmission and distribution protection and control systems

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and registration with APEGA as a Professional Engineer or equivalent

  • Advanced experience in ETAP (Electrical Transient Analyzer Program)- arc flash, short circuit, motor start up and load flow study modelling

  • Experience in Industrial Facility and/or Utility environment, up to 260 kV

  • Experience with AESO (Alberta Electrical System Operator) AUC (Alberta Utilities Commission) NERC (North American Electric Reliability)-related Alberta Reliability Standards, and transmission requirements for major transmission-connected load

  • Experience with GE, ABB and SEL Relay programming and interface software

  • Experience in fault analysis, report writing and interfacing in multidiscipline teams

Responsibilities:

  • Manage protection system updates and modifications through the Management of Change MOC process, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, and Suncor requirements

  • Conduct and review power system and protection coordination studies using ETAP, including analysis, reporting, and recommendations to support system reliability, regulatory submissions, and the AESO ARS maintenance program

  • Provide engineering and reliability support to operations, including technical troubleshooting, outage support, and recommendations to resolve system alarms, trips, and performance issues

  • Lead condition assessments of electrical plant assets and support incident investigations, fault analysis, and corrective action development to improve system performance and reliability

  • Partner with project teams to ensure required system studies, protection coordination, and safe integration are completed for site growth and maintenance projects

  • Oversee and support the construction, testing, and commissioning of electrical projects to ensure safe execution and compliance with regulatory, technical, and company standards

  • Support the development and implementation of electrical reliability programs to meet maintenance, operational, and regulatory requirements

  • Collaborate with Power System Engineers and low-voltage business teams to drive alignment, coordination, and efficient execution of protection system scopes and deliverables

Location and other Key details:

  • The position will be based at the Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Center at 150 – 6th Ave S.W

  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday with business travel to sites as required
