Maintenance & Facilities Manager

The Maintenance & Facilities Manager is responsible for developing, leading, and executing the maintenance strategy for SCCL's manufacturing facility. This role will transition the organization from a reactive maintenance approach to a proactive, preventative maintenance program that maximizes equipment reliability, production uptime, workplace safety, and operational efficiency.

The successful candidate will oversee all facility, equipment, utility, and infrastructure maintenance activities while supporting a significant facility expansion project. Working closely with Operations, Quality Assurance, Safety, and external contractors, this position ensures manufacturing assets remain reliable, compliant, and capable of supporting future business growth.

This is a hands-on leadership role that combines strategic planning with day-to-day operational execution.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintenance Strategy & Asset Reliability

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve a preventative and predictive maintenance program that transitions SCCL from reactive to proactive maintenance.

  • Establish maintenance schedules, work order processes, equipment inspections, and maintenance KPIs.

  • Analyze equipment failures, conduct root cause analyses, and implement corrective actions to improve equipment reliability and extend asset life.

  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, equipment histories, and spare parts inventories.

Facility, Equipment & Contractor Management

  • Oversee the maintenance, repair, and reliability of all production equipment, utilities, building systems, and facility infrastructure.

  • Coordinate maintenance activities with production schedules to minimize downtime and maximize operational efficiency.

  • Manage relationships with contractors, equipment suppliers, and service providers, ensuring work is completed safely, on time, and within budget.

  • Ensure all maintenance activities comply with food manufacturing standards, regulatory requirements, and company safety policies.

Capital Projects & Continuous Improvement

  • Support the planning and execution of SCCL's capital improvement initiatives, including the facility expansion.
  • Coordinate equipment installations, commissioning, and facility modifications while minimizing operational disruptions.
  • Identify and implement process improvements, automation opportunities, and equipment upgrades that improve reliability, productivity, and operational performance.

Budget & Operational Support

  • Develop and manage the annual maintenance budget, monitor expenditures, and support capital planning.
  • Evaluate repair versus replacement decisions and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Partner with Operations, Quality, and other departments to resolve production issues, improve equipment performance, and support continuous improvement initiatives.

Leadership & Safety

  • Foster a proactive maintenance culture focused on reliability, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead or coordinate maintenance personnel and external contractors by setting priorities, providing guidance, and promoting professional development.
  • Ensure compliance with Saskatchewan Occupational Health & Safety legislation, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), environmental regulations, and company policies, while championing a safe and efficient work environment.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Education Examples:

    • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related discipline preferred

    • Engineering Technology Diploma

    • Red Seal Journeyperson Industrial Mechanic (Millwright), Electrician, or related skilled trade with progressive maintenance leadership experience

    • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation is considered an asset.

  • Experience Examples:

    • 5–10 years of progressive industrial maintenance experience.

    • Minimum 3 years leading maintenance programs within a manufacturing environment.

    • Experience implementing preventative maintenance systems.

    • Experience supporting capital projects or facility expansions.

    • Experience managing maintenance budgets.

    • Experience working in food manufacturing, dairy processing, agricultural processing, or pharmaceutical manufacturing is considered an asset.

  • Physical Requirement Examples:

    • Ability to access production equipment, mezzanines, and mechanical rooms.

    • Ability to lift up to 25 kg (55 lbs) occasionally.

    • Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends during planned shutdowns or emergency repairs.

    • Availability for after-hours support during critical equipment failures.

  • Strong Knowledge Of:

    • Industrial Automation

    • PLC Troubleshooting (asset)

    • Building Maintenance

    • CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems)

    • Maintenance Planning

    • Root Cause Analysis

    • Knowledge of GMP and food manufacturing environments is preferred.
