POSITION SUMMARY
The Maintenance Millwright is a senior-level, highly autonomous role responsible for keeping Portland Bolt's mechanically driven production equipment — much of it dating from the 1950s–70s — running safely and reliably. This role diagnoses, repairs, rebuilds, and fabricates independently with minimal supervision, owns the condition of the plant's equipment, and has a direct line to operations leadership.
MAINTENANCE & MILLWRIGHT OPERATIONS
- Troubleshoot, repair, rebuild, and maintain production machinery, including legacy mechanical equipment where manuals and OEM support are no longer available
- Independently diagnose failures across bearings, gearboxes, drives, power transmission, hydraulics, pneumatics, and lubrication systems
- Perform precision work — alignment, leveling, and fitting to close tolerances — using precision measuring instruments
- Fabricate and machine replacement parts (weld, cut, mill, turn) when parts cannot be purchased; on equipment of this age, this is a core function
- Rig, move, and install equipment safely
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Set up and run the preventive and predictive maintenance program, documenting work in the ERP system (Acumatica)
- Read and interpret blueprints and schematics, and reverse-engineer parts and systems when drawings do not exist
- Operate overhead cranes and shop equipment safely
- Own problems from diagnosis through resolution without step-by-step direction
- Take ownership of the plant's condition and raise concerns with operations leadership before equipment fails
- Perform other duties as assigned
SAFETY
- Follow all safety precautions, lockout/tagout procedures, and production safety guidelines at all times
- Rig, lift, and move equipment and materials safely using appropriate crane, hoist, and rigging practices
- Follow safe welding, cutting, and machining practices
- Inspect equipment for integrity and safety; report anomalous conditions and hazards promptly
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, tools, and shop
WORKING CONDITIONS
Working Environment:
- Industrial shop environment with older mechanical production equipment; exposure to noise, heat, vibration, and moving mechanical equipment
- Exposure to oils, lubricants, hydraulic fluids, and welding fumes
Protective Equipment Required:
- Safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and steel-toed footwear; additional task-specific PPE (e.g., welding protection) as required
Physical & Sensory Demands:
- Stands and walks for extended periods; frequent bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and climbing
- Lifts and carries materials and components up to 75 lbs; heavier items require rigging, a team lift, or mechanical assist
- Vision adequate for precision measurement, blueprint reading, and close inspection work
