About the Role:

The Data Science and Analytics team at St John WA uses data to help our people make informed decisions to better serve the community.

An exciting opportunity is now available for an experienced people leader to join the team as Manager Data Science and Analytics.

This permanent, full-time position reports to the Senior Manager Data Science and Analytics and is based at our State Office in Belmont.

We are seeking a capable and collaborative manager with a strong record of leading people, delivering complex work and building high-performing teams. Experience working in the data and analytics domain would be beneficial, however the focus of this position is leadership/management rather than technical skills. As such; applications are strongly encouraged from people leaders with experience across any domain or industry.

This is one of four manager positions within the broader Data Science and Analytics team of around 25 people. The team operates as a flexible, high-performing in-house consulting function, working to translate business problems into:

• Analysis and insight
• Automated information products
• Advanced analytics and data science services
• Practical advice and recommendations

The team works with stakeholders across the entire organisation (and externally across the broader health and emergency services sectors) to inform decision making on operational, commercial, contractual, and managerial matters. Current members of the team bring diverse qualifications and experience across fields including physics, mathematics, engineering, law, psychology and business, with backgrounds spanning government, private industry, academia, consulting and defence.

What you will do:

As Manager Data Science and Analytics, you will lead a unit of Business Intelligence Analysts and work collaboratively with other managers within the team to deliver meaningful outcomes for St John WA.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Leading, coaching, and developing a team of analysts at different career stages, fostering an inclusive and high-performing environment
• Planning, prioritising and overseeing the delivery of projects, products and services that support operational and strategic decision making
• Managing day-to-day team operations, including workload allocation, scheduling, scope refinement, and timely decision making
• Building effective relationships with senior leaders and stakeholders to understand their needs, clarify priorities and shape practical solutions
• Establishing and improving processes, templates, frameworks and governance that enable consistent, timely, and high-quality delivery
• Supporting your team to translate complex information into clear, useful, and actionable advice for technical and non-technical audiences
• Representing the team in key meetings and influencing decisions that affect information, reporting and decision-support capability
• Working with the Senior Manager Data Science and Analytics to balance resources, align priorities and ensure a consistent approach across the broader team
• Undertaking people management responsibilities, including performance development, recruitment and wellbeing support

What you will need:

Essential:

• Demonstrated experience in a formal people leadership and/or management role, including leading, coaching and developing staff
• A proven ability to lead teams delivering multiple concurrent projects, services, or work packages in a complex stakeholder environment
• Strong project and operational management skills, including planning, prioritisation and scope management
• Experience building effective working relationships with senior leaders, stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams
• The ability to create a positive, accountable, and inclusive team culture
• Excellent communication, critical-thinking and judgement skills, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and make sound decisions
• The ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and influence decisions with technical and non-technical audiences
• The ability to conceptualise, document, and implement processes to support the delivery of intelligence and analytics products that are correct, complete, and appropriate
• A collaborative leadership style and a commitment to the success of the broader Data Science and Analytics team

Desirable:

• Experience in data, analytics, business intelligence, reporting, or a similarly technical professional environment
• Experience delivering projects or services that use data to inform operational or strategic decisions
• Knowledge of analytics tools, methodologies, and best practices for converting data into actionable information
• Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline, such as mathematics, business, science, engineering or information technology, and/or qualifications in management or leadership, such as an MBA
