Description

Position Summary
The Manager, IoT Systems Deployment leads the planning, deployment, commissioning, and operational transition of IoT and connected manufacturing technologies across production facilities.
This role is responsible for ensuring IoT solutions are deployed safely, consistently, securely, on schedule, and according to established architecture and engineering standards. The manager leads deployment engineers and technicians while coordinating closely with manufacturing, plant IT, controls engineering, networking, cybersecurity, MES, infrastructure, vendors, and IoT platform teams.
The position serves as the bridge between IoT architecture/engineering and operational execution, converting approved designs and standards into reliable production solutions.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

  • IoT Deployment Leadership
    • Lead deployment of IoT and OT technologies across manufacturing facilities.
    • Develop deployment strategies, site readiness requirements, implementation plans, and rollout schedules.
    • Coordinate installation, configuration, commissioning, validation, and production handoff.
    • Establish repeatable deployment methodologies that allow successful solutions to scale across multiple plants.
    • Manage deployment priorities based on business value, manufacturing requirements, technical dependencies, and available resources.
    • Ensure deployments meet defined scope, schedule, quality, cybersecurity, and operational requirements.
    • Provide leadership visibility into deployment progress, risks, dependencies, and resource constraints
  • Site Readiness & Deployment Planning
    • Establish a formal readiness process before deployment begins
    • Develop go/no-go criteria so deployment work does not proceed when critical prerequisites are incomplete
  • Installation & Commissioning
    • Oversee installation and commissioning of: IoT gateways, Industrial PCs, Edge computing devices, Sensors, Industrial Ethernet infrastructure, Wireless IoT devices, Machine connectivity, Data acquisition systems, Manufacturing system interfaces, Edge-to-cloud integrations
    • Ensure deployments follow approved technical standards, configuration baselines, cybersecurity policies, and engineering documentation.
  • Manufacturing Connectivity
    • Ensure reliable implementation of the complete connectivity chain:
    • Machine / PLC → IoT Gateway / Edge → OT Network → Platform / Server → Application / Data Platform
    • The deployment organization should validate each layer of this path before production acceptance.
    • The manager is responsible for ensuring technical issues are assigned to the correct engineering domain rather than allowing cross-functional ownership gaps to delay deployments.
  • Cross-Functional Coordination
    • Coordinate deployment activities across: Manufacturing Operations, Plant IT, Corporate IT, IoT Engineering, Controls Engineering, MES, Network Engineering, Infrastructure, Cybersecurity, Data Engineering, Maintenance, Production Engineering, Equipment suppliers, System integrator
    • Define responsibilities through a clear RACI model so there is established ownership for design, installation, configuration, testing, approval, escalation, and operational support.
  • Deployment Standardization
    • Develop a repeatable IoT Deployment Playbook covering the lifecycle:
    • Assess → Design → Prepare → Deploy → Commission → Validate → Document → Handoff → Hypercare → Close
    • Provide Standard deliverables
    • The goal is to make IoT deployment an industrialized capability rather than a collection of individual projects.
  • Cybersecurity & Governance
    • Ensure IoT/OT deployments meet corporate cybersecurity policies.
    • Coordinate network segmentation, firewall, remote access, identity, device hardening, and vulnerability requirements.
    • Ensure devices use approved operating systems, firmware, software, and configurations.
    • Support alignment with OT security practices such as IEC 62443 and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework.
    • Ensure cybersecurity requirements are incorporated during design and deployment instead of addressed after installation.
    • Prevent unauthorized or unmanaged IoT devices from entering production environments.
    • Ensure exceptions are documented and approved through established governance processes.
  • Asset & Configuration Management
    • Ensure all deployed assets are properly documented.
    • Ensure deployments are integrated with appropriate asset-management and CMDB processes, including platforms such as ServiceNow CMDB/OTSM where applicable.
    • Deployment should not be considered complete until appropriate documentation and asset records are established.
  • Testing & Production Acceptance
    • Establish formal commissioning and acceptance criteria.
    • Develop formal Production Acceptance Criteria before transferring responsibility to the operational support organization.
  • Operational Handoff & Hypercare
    • Ensure deployed systems transition cleanly from project teams into production support.
    • For significant deployments, establish a defined hypercare period, typically 1 to 4 weeks depending on production criticality, before final operational acceptance.
  • Team Leadership
    • Lead IoT deployment engineers, technicians, contractors, and/or system integrators.
    • Establish roles, responsibilities, expectations, and technical standards.
    • Develop team capabilities
    • Establish technical training and development plans.
    • Conduct resource and capacity planning.
    • Develop future technical leaders.
  • Project & Vendor Management
    • Manage deployment schedules, resources, budgets, and technical dependencies.
    • Coordinate deployment activities with equipment manufacturers, system integrators, and technology vendors.
    • Review vendor technical designs and implementation plans
    • Hold suppliers accountable for technical, quality, schedule, documentation, and cybersecurity requirements.
    • Identify and communicate deployment risk early.
    • Support RFQ/RFP activities and technical vendor evaluations where required.
  • Continuous Improvement
    • Conduct post-deployment reviews.
    • Track recurring deployment problems.
    • Convert lessons learned into standards and deployment procedures.
    • Automate repetitive configuration and validation activities where practical.
    • Identify opportunities to reduce installation time and cost.
    • Work with IoT architecture and engineering teams to improve future solution designs.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Engineering, Computer Science, Industrial Technology, Automation, Electronics, or related technical discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 7+ years of IoT, OT, manufacturing technology, infrastructure, industrial networking, controls, or related experience
  • 3+ years of technical leadership, project leadership, or people management experience
  • Experience deploying technology into production manufacturing environments
  • Experience managing cross-functional technical projects
  • Demonstrated understanding of IT/OT integration
  • Technical Knowledge
    • Strong understanding of several of the following: IoT/OT, Networking, Infrastructure
    • Manufacturing: MES, PLCs, SCADA, HMIs, Historians, Machine Connectivity, Production Support environments
    • Enterprise Platforms: ServiceNow, PowerBI, DOMO, SQL, Databricks, OT asset-discovery platforms, network-monitoring platform
