Manager on Duty

About the Position

Carpenter's Corner is looking for a dependable, service-oriented Manager on Duty to help lead daily store operations and provide an exceptional experience for customers, donors, and team members.

Working alongside the Store Manager and Retail Management team, the Manager on Duty helps ensure the store operates smoothly, maintains a clean and organized environment, and reflects the Christ-centered mission and values of Carpenter's Place. This role provides hands-on leadership in customer service, merchandising, cash handling, team support, and opening and closing procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Service & Team Leadership

• Create a welcoming, friendly, and joyful shopping experience for every customer.
• Model Carpenter's Place's mission and values by demonstrating Christ-centered service toward customers, donors, and team members.
• Support the Retail Management team in maintaining customer service standards and a positive team environment.
• Respond to customer questions and concerns professionally and help resolve issues appropriately.

Daily Store Operations

• Help maintain a clean, safe, organized, and inviting store environment.
• Ensure merchandise is returned to its proper location and shelves and clothing racks are stocked.
• Monitor and replenish janitorial and restroom supplies.
• Maintain fitting rooms and assist with cleaning floors, restrooms, break rooms, windows, doors, sidewalks, parking areas, and other public spaces.
• Identify and address safety hazards promptly.

Merchandising & Stocking

• Assist with setting up and updating store displays to promote merchandise and enhance the shopping experience.
• Stock shelves and clothing racks to keep merchandise accessible and the sales floor organized.
• Follow inventory rotation guidelines and management direction when pulling and organizing merchandise.

Register Operations & Cash Handling

• Process cash, credit card, and other approved transactions accurately.
• Assist with voids, refunds, and other register functions in accordance with company policies.
• Help maintain the accuracy and security of store funds and transactions.
• Prepare bank deposits and obtain register change as needed.

Opening, Closing & Communication

• Open and close the store according to the assigned schedule and established procedures.
• Communicate customer service concerns, register discrepancies, employee issues, accidents, and other operational matters to the Store Manager.
• Follow company policies, procedures, and safety standards.
• Attend required training sessions and scheduled store meetings.
• Assist with additional duties as assigned to support the store and the broader mission of Carpenter's Place.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Two to three years of retail or related experience preferred.
• Commitment to the faith-based mission and values of Carpenter's Place.
• Strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment, solve problems, and manage multiple tasks in a busy retail environment.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and communicate effectively with team members, customers, and management.
• Basic math skills, including working with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to operate a point-of-sale (POS) system, cash register, credit card terminal, computer, and other standard office equipment.
• Ability to remain focused and productive while managing interruptions and competing priorities.
• Ability to pass a background check and drug screening.
• Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and proof of insurance for work-related travel. Exceptions to vehicle ownership may be considered upon request.

Compensation & Benefits

The hourly pay range for this position is $16.00-$19.20, depending on qualifications and experience.

Work Schedule & Environment

• Full-time position averaging 40 hours per week.
• Work is performed primarily in person at a Carpenter's Corner thrift store in Rockford, Illinois.
• A primary store location may be assigned at the time of hire.
• The position may require standing or sitting for extended periods and lifting up to 50 pounds.
