Manager- Outpatient Clinical Documentation Improvement

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Outpatient Clinical Documentation (CDI) Manager drives excellence across our multi-facility integrated healthcare delivery system by leading a dynamic outpatient clinical documentation improvement program. You'll take ownership of day-to-day operations—from building and mentoring high-performing teams to ensuring quality reviews, managing productivity, and delivering strategic reporting that impacts organizational performance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead & Develop Teams: Manage personnel, drive education and training initiatives, optimize work assignments, and foster a culture of continuous improvement within the Outpatient CDI program
  • Bridge Clinical & Administrative Worlds: Serve as a trusted liaison between physicians, medical group leadership, and clinical departments—translating complex coding rules, HCC coding strategies, and reimbursement guidelines into actionable insights
  • Drive Strategic Initiatives: Partner with organizational leadership to design, test, implement, and evaluate integrated revenue cycle solutions that enhance business practices and operational efficiency
  • Champion Standardization: Establish and promote best practices across Henry Ford Health System, ensuring consistent, compliant, and accurate medical record documentation that maximizes appropriate reimbursement
  • Deliver Data-Driven Results: Conduct analysis, interpret performance data, evaluate processes, and propose evidence-based improvements that strengthen program outcomes and organizational alignment

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration or Healthcare Administration. A Bachelor's Degree in Art or Science with a medical focus would also be acceptable. Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred.
  • Five (5) years clinical operations experience as evidenced by Acute or Ambulatory Nursing and/or Coding and CDI experience directly related to revenue coding and reimbursement for hospital or physician services.
  • Significant project management experience and outstanding analytical, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to teach complex technical/analytical concepts to physicians, system leadership, management and staff.
  • Analytical ability necessary to conduct basic research, analyze and interpret data, evaluate processes and propose improvements.
  • Ability to manage, coordinate, and lead simultaneously.
  • Ability to estimate time frames and meet projected deadlines.
  • Ability to understand and lead change. Ability to develop strong working and collaborative relationships with physician leaders in clinical and academic settings.
  • Demonstrates clinical and/or coding competence.
  • Demonstrate experience in all areas of medical record functions, including privacy & compliance regulations.
  • Demonstrates strong knowledge of ICD-10 CM/PCS conventions, rules and regulations.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

  • Registered Nurse (RN or BSN) and/or Coding Certification required. Coding Certification may be CPC, CCS, RHIT, and RHIA.

This position is Hybrid and requires travel within Michigan locations occasionally.
