Manager, Quality Engineering
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Manager, Quality Engineering based in the United States.
We are seeking an experienced quality engineering leader to establish and scale a unified quality assurance function across a portfolio of software products. In this newly created role, you will shape testing strategies, introduce shared automation frameworks, and establish measurable quality standards that support reliable software delivery. You will lead and develop a distributed team of QA engineers while collaborating closely with engineering leaders and executive stakeholders. Your work will help protect sensitive financial, healthcare-related, and personal information while strengthening product reliability and customer trust. You will also champion the responsible use of AI-assisted testing tools, combining innovation with human oversight and strong data protection practices. This fully remote opportunity offers the autonomy to build a quality engineering function from the ground up within a collaborative, outcomes-driven environment.
Accountabilities
- Establish a unified quality engineering strategy: Assess existing testing practices across all products, meet with QA engineers and engineering leaders, and deliver a written evaluation, prioritized improvement roadmap, and quality baseline for each product during the first month.
- Build scalable test automation: Design and implement shared API and user interface automation frameworks, integrate automated tests into continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, validate the approach on an initial product, and expand it across the organization.
- Define quality standards and release readiness: Establish consistent QA practices, testing strategies, risk-based testing approaches, and release-readiness criteria. Provide quality assessments and recommendations for every release while respecting engineering leads' responsibility for final release decisions.
- Monitor and communicate quality performance: Define, measure, and report meaningful quality metrics, including test coverage, testing cycle time, defect trends, and production escapes, ensuring consistent and transparent reporting across products.
- Champion responsible AI adoption: Introduce AI-assisted tools for test design, test generation, automation development, documentation, and defect analysis. Ensure human review of AI-generated outputs, follow architecture review requirements for new tools, and prevent access to sensitive production client, payment, or health data without appropriate approval.
- Lead and develop the QA team: Manage QA engineers and software development engineers in test (SDETs), establish individual objectives, provide regular feedback, conduct performance reviews, and create development plans that support continuous improvement.
- Support workforce planning and recruitment: Partner with technical leadership and HR to assess staffing requirements, identify capability gaps, and develop data-driven recommendations for future QA team structure and hiring.
- Drive cross-functional collaboration: Work effectively with distributed teams across the United States and Latin America, influence engineering stakeholders without direct reporting relationships, and communicate quality risks and recommendations clearly to both technical teams and executive leadership.
Requirements
- At least 10 years of experience in QA and quality engineering, including experience establishing or transforming a QA function and managing QA engineers and/or SDETs.
- Strong hands-on experience with UI and API test automation frameworks, such as Selenium, Playwright, Cucumber, or Mocha, and CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or TeamCity.
- Practical experience applying AI-assisted testing or software engineering tools, with concrete examples demonstrating their impact and an understanding of the importance of human review.
- Proven expertise in quality metrics, test traceability, release readiness, risk-based testing, defect management, and continuous quality improvement.
- Experience testing financial, payment processing, tax, escrow, trust-account, insurance, or other regulated software systems where data integrity, security, and reliability are essential.
- Demonstrated people-management capabilities, including team development, performance management, coaching, and hiring, along with the ability to influence engineering leaders and build consensus across distributed teams.
- Experience designing and managing Jira workflows, with strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present technical findings and quality metrics to both engineers and senior executives.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with a pragmatic approach to balancing release timelines, technical risk, and product quality.
- Preferred qualifications: Experience working with healthcare or protected health information (PHI)-related products, performance testing tools such as JMeter, and cloud-based test environments on AWS or Google Cloud.
- Location and employment eligibility: Candidates must reside in the United States and be authorized to work for any U.S. employer without current or future visa sponsorship. This is a full-time W-2 employee position; staffing agency and Corp-to-Corp arrangements are not accepted. Candidates must be comfortable working during core Eastern Time hours, approximately 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET, participating in video interviews with their camera on, and completing employment eligibility verification at hire.
Benefits
- Fully remote work: Work remotely from anywhere in the United States, with an emphasis on trust, accountability, and measurable outcomes rather than tracking hours.
- Home-office equipment: Receive essential equipment to support a productive remote setup, including a laptop, two monitors, a keyboard, and other necessary accessories.
- Comprehensive healthcare coverage: Access medical insurance through Cigna, with individual and family plan options that include dental and vision coverage.
- Retirement savings: Participate in a 401(k) retirement savings plan to support long-term financial goals.
- Flexible paid time off: Benefit from an unlimited PTO policy, an additional day off for your birthday, and a dedicated Day of Purpose.
- Leadership and career growth: Take ownership of a newly created quality engineering function, establish group-wide standards, and influence technical strategy across multiple products.
- Supportive engineering culture: Collaborate with engineering leadership in an environment that values responsible AI adoption, continuous improvement, transparency, and human oversight.
- Meaningful impact: Help safeguard sensitive information, financial transactions, and software experiences that support individuals and families through important life events.
