About Us

Smithfield Market is a unique and busy working environment where the safety and security of market users, tenants, visitors and staff is paramount.

As part of the City Surveyor’s Department, the Market Constabulary plays an important role in maintaining a safe, secure and well-regulated market environment. Working alongside Market management, tenants, City of London colleagues and the emergency services, our officers help ensure the Market operates safely and effectively around the clock.

The Role

As a Market Constable, you will play a key role in maintaining safety, security and good order across Smithfield Market. You will provide an effective 24-hour security presence, helping to prevent and detect crime and unlawful activity, protect Corporation property and ensure Market rules and regulations are followed.

You will patrol the Market, control vehicles and pedestrians, monitor CCTV and ANPR, respond to incidents and emergencies, and support fire, evacuation and first aid procedures. You will investigate incidents, enforce Market rules and regulations, maintain accurate records and reports, and liaise with Market tenants, the public, City of London staff and emergency services.

This is a varied role where no two shifts are necessarily the same. You will need to be alert, responsive and prepared to take appropriate action when circumstances require it.

About You

We are looking for someone who is professional, reliable and confident working in a busy operational environment, with experience in security, enforcement or a similar role. You will be able to communicate effectively, build positive working relationships and remain calm and professional when dealing with challenging situations.

You will have good written and administrative skills, be comfortable using computer systems, work effectively as part of a team and be able to use your initiative when responding to incidents and emergencies. Experience or relevant training in first aid, fire safety, CCTV and ANPR operation is required.

You must be able to undertake patrols and inspections in all weather conditions, wear a uniform professionally and complete the required Constabulary Officer’s Duty Training.

Working at Smithfield Market

This role operates across a 24-hour service, 365 days a year, either 8 hour or 12 hour shifts (12 hour shifts are worked on the weekend), including shifts covering nights, weekends and public holidays as required.

If you are looking for a role where you can make a practical contribution to the safety and effective operation of a unique and busy London market, we would like to hear from you.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and as part of the selection process the successful applicant will be required to obtain a Standard Disclosure & Barring Service check.
