About the job

Job summary

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is the UK’s largest producer of official statistics, covering a range of key economic, social and demographic topics. These include measuring changes in the value of the UK economy, estimating the size, geographic distribution, and characteristics of the population, and providing indicators of price inflation, employment, earnings, crime, and migration.

We also run the Census every 10 years, which helps to build a detailed picture of the population of England and Wales. The next Census will be in 2031.

Every day, decisions are made that have an impact on the things that matter to all of us. To make those decisions, people and organisations need up-to-date, reliable information. For the most part, this information comes in the form of data. At the ONS, we collect and use these data safely and securely to create official statistics.

As well as the Census, another way that we collect data is through monthly, quarterly and annual surveys, as well as several one-off surveys. It’s vital that people continue to take part in our surveys, so that our statistics are as accurate and representative as possible.

Job description

Are you a marketing and communications professional who can deliver content-led marketing to engage with a range of audiences and promote the important work of the ONS? This is an exciting opportunity to play an important role in engaging with the public and promoting the positive effect that data and statistics have on everyone’s lives. You will find the stories behind the stats, exploring creative ways to bring data to life.

Organisations use our statistics to make important decisions that affect us all. It’s important for us to show how our data and statistics can benefit everyone. We also need to make sure that more people take part in our surveys and studies. As we plan for Census 2031, it’s more important than ever to position the ONS as a trusted source of official statistics.

You will play an important role in delivering the content strategy that will achieve this through various marketing strategies, both online and offline, on paid-for and owned platforms. This will include:

  • Creative development of campaign propositions based on recognised motivations and barriers
  • Creating strap line options and body content for marketing materials as part of an iterative process
  • Writing long and short-form content for print and digital promotional materials, including adverts, leaflets, posters, postcards, website pages, social media posts, video scripts, etc.
  • Reviewing content based on agreed house-style and tone of voice guidelines

But above all, you will bring your skills in creativity and storytelling to find engaging, innovative ways to share the important work we do at the ONS.

Your experience and expertise

You will have several years’ content marketing experience, and evidence of delivering communications impact to achieve organisational objectives, and as part of wider-scale multi-strand campaigns.

You will be able to demonstrate the use of insight, analytics and campaign optimisation in content or campaign development and execution, and how this resulted in an increase in engagement and organisation outcomes.

You will demonstrate the ability to craft creative, innovative marketing concepts and content that not only answer advertising briefs but also push the boundaries of what’s possible to increase engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with internal colleagues and external partners to create effective, engaging content ideas that align with ONS objectives.
  • To be a source of creative concepts and ideas that can be progressed into different mediums and materials.

    - adheres to target audience insights, house-style and tone of voice guidance
    - is technically correct from a business perspective
    - conforms to relevant internal guidelines and legal requirements
  • Work with senior manager to deliver regular updates and report KPIs.
  • Collaborate with teams across Communications and the wider organisation to deliver the best outcomes possible.
