Marketing Director
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and commercially minded Gallery Marketing Director to lead the gallery’s marketing, brand development, audience engagement, and international business expansion.
The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the art, luxury, cultural, or creative industries, combined with proven marketing and business-development experience in China and/or the United States. This role will be responsible for strengthening the gallery’s market position, developing new collector and institutional relationships, and identifying opportunities to expand the gallery’s presence internationally.
The successful candidate should be equally comfortable developing high-level strategy and executing campaigns, partnerships, events, and client-development initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Marketing & Brand Strategy
- Develop and implement the gallery’s overall marketing and communications strategy.
- Strengthen the gallery’s brand positioning, reputation, and international visibility.
- Lead integrated marketing campaigns across digital, social media, PR, events, exhibitions, and strategic partnerships.
- Develop compelling narratives around artists, exhibitions, and the gallery’s program.
- Manage the gallery’s digital presence, including website, social media, email marketing, and online campaigns.
- Establish measurable marketing KPIs and regularly evaluate campaign performance.
Business Expansion
- Develop and execute market-entry and business-expansion strategies for China and/or the United States.
- Identify new markets, collectors, art institutions, cultural organizations, brands, and commercial partners.
- Build and maintain relationships with collectors, VIP clients, museums, foundations, galleries, art fairs, media, and other key stakeholders.
- Develop strategic partnerships and cross-market collaborations to increase the gallery’s reach and revenue.
- Research local market trends, competitor activity, collector behavior, and emerging opportunities.
- Represent the gallery at major art fairs, exhibitions, cultural events, and industry functions in relevant markets.
- Develop initiatives to attract new collectors and deepen relationships with existing clients.
Events, Exhibitions & Art Fairs
- Lead marketing strategy and audience development for exhibitions and gallery programs.
- Plan and execute VIP previews, collector events, artist talks, private viewings, and cultural partnerships.
- Coordinate marketing activities around international art fairs and special projects.
- Work closely with artists, curators, sales teams, designers, PR agencies, and external partners.
Team & Agency Management
- Lead and develop the marketing and communications team.
- Manage external PR, advertising, digital, creative, and communications agencies where required.
- Establish budgets, timelines, and performance objectives.
- Work closely with the gallery’s senior management and sales teams to align marketing activities with commercial objectives.
Requirements
- 8+ years of relevant experience in marketing, communications, business development, or brand management.
- Proven experience in the art gallery, contemporary art, luxury, fashion, hospitality, cultural, or other premium creative industries.
- Demonstrated professional experience and network in China and/or the United States, with a strong understanding of the local business and cultural environment.
- Proven track record of market expansion, partnership development, client acquisition, or international business development.
- Strong understanding of the art market, collector behavior, cultural trends, and/or luxury consumer markets.
- Excellent strategic thinking combined with strong hands-on execution skills.
- Strong communication, negotiation, presentation, and relationship-management abilities.
- Experience managing teams, agencies, budgets, and external partners.
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Mandarin proficiency is highly desirable for candidates responsible for the China market; strong local-language capability in the relevant market is an advantage.
- Established network among collectors, cultural institutions, brands, media, art fairs, or other relevant stakeholders is highly desirable.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience successfully launching or growing a brand, gallery, or creative business in a new international market.
- Existing relationships with collectors, museums, foundations, corporations, family offices, art advisors, or cultural institutions in China and/or America.
- Experience with major international art fairs and cultural events.
- Experience working across different cultural and business environments.
- Strong understanding of digital marketing, social media, CRM, data analytics, and emerging marketing technologies.
- Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to identify and convert new business opportunities.
