MASTER (OIL&CHEMICAL TANKER)
Summary
Oversee the safe, compliant operation of an oil/chemical tanker, manage crew, liaise with port authorities, and ensure regulatory documentation and inspections are completed.
Roles & Responsibilities
The Master is responsible for:
- Overall safety and efficient operation of the ship and everyone on board.
- Implementing the company's safety, health, security, and environmental policies.
- Ensuring compliance with oil pollution prevention regulations.
- Enforcing flag state and company regulations.
- Safe and efficient navigation of the vessel.
- Compliance with the Ship Security Plan (SSP) and ISPS Code, reporting security matters to the Company Security Officer (CSO).
- Maintaining discipline among the crew.
- Ensuring proper loading in accordance with: Load Line Certificate Applicable legislation Company/charterer's loading instructions
- Handling SIRE inspections and other surveys.
Crew Management
- Lead, supervise, motivate, and develop officers and crew.
- Maintain discipline, professionalism, and teamwork onboard.
- Conduct crew appraisals, performance evaluations, and onboard training.
- Ensure crew certification and familiarisation comply with STCW and Company requirements.
Commercial Responsibilities
- Liaise with charterers, terminal representatives, port authorities, agents, surveyors, and Company management.
- Ensure efficient port turnaround while maintaining safety and regulatory compliance.
- Monitor vessel operational performance and optimise fuel consumption and voyage efficiency.
Inspection & Audit Management
- Prepare and successfully manage:SIRE inspections / CDI inspections (Chemical Tankers)/ Flag State inspections / Port State Control (PSC) inspections /Internal and external ISM/ISPS audits / Class surveys /Vetting inspections
- Ensure prompt rectification of deficiencies and implementation of corrective actions.
Documentation
- Ensure accurate maintenance of: Official Log Book /Oil Record Book /Cargo Record Book /Garbage Record Book /Ballast Water Record Book Navigation records /Safety Management documentation /Certificates and statutory records
Requirements
- Valid Certificate of Competency (CoC) Class 1 – Master Mariner.
- Valid STCW Certificates in accordance with international requirements.
- Advanced Training for Oil Tanker Cargo Operations and Advanced Training for Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations.
- Minimum 24 months' sailing experience as Master on Oil and/or Chemical Tankers (or as required by Company policy).
- Previous command experience on 20K - 10K DWT
- Strong knowledge of: Oil and chemical cargo handling / Tank cleaning operations/ Cargo compatibility /Inert Gas System (IGS) /Ship-to-Ship (STS) transfer operations
