About Detroit Recovery Project

Detroit Recovery Project (DRP) is committed to supporting individuals affected by substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions through integrated, recovery-oriented services. Our approach recognizes that recovery extends beyond clinical treatment and includes health and wellness, family and recovery support, employment, education, and community connection.

DRP is seeking a compassionate, knowledgeable, and collaborative Nurse Practitioner to support an opioid treatment grant focused on expanding access to medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD), improving health outcomes, and connecting participants to comprehensive, community-based care.

Position Summary

The Nurse Practitioner will provide evidence-based clinical services to individuals seeking treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD), including timely access to MOUD, clinical assessments, medication management, preventive healthcare, and care coordination. This position will support same-day MOUD induction when clinically appropriate and work collaboratively with therapists, peer specialists, and other healthcare professionals to address barriers to treatment and recovery.

The Nurse Practitioner will also support mobile medical outreach, monitor participant progress, coordinate referrals, and maintain accurate clinical documentation to meet grant deliverables, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide timely access to MOUD, including same-day induction when clinically appropriate and feasible, for individuals seeking treatment.

  • Conduct OUD screenings, clinical assessments, and treatment planning to identify participant needs and determine appropriate interventions.

  • Review the Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS) report as required before prescribing buprenorphine and in accordance with applicable law and organizational protocols.

  • Prescribe and manage appropriate medications for opioid use disorder, including buprenorphine, Vivitrol, Sublocade, and Brixadi, consistent with clinical judgment, participant needs, and applicable prescribing requirements.

  • Educate participants on available treatment options, medication benefits and risks, adherence, and ongoing recovery support.

  • Refer participants who prefer methadone treatment to New Light Recovery Center or an appropriate treatment provider.

  • Monitor participant progress and adjust treatment plans based on clinical assessments, response to treatment, safety considerations, and participant preferences.

  • Review and monitor drug screening results as part of ongoing treatment and clinical decision-making.

  • When participants have repeated opioid-positive drug screens, assess barriers to treatment and offer additional supports or appropriate injectable MOUD options across up to three opportunities, consistent with clinical protocols and participant choice, before recommending a higher level of care when appropriate.

  • Support the grant objective of transitioning at least 50% of participants retained in treatment for 90 days to long-acting injectable MOUD, when clinically appropriate and consistent with informed participant choice.

  • Collaborate with the treatment team to identify risks to retention, strengthen engagement, and connect participants with additional recovery resources.

  • Provide clinical services through DRP’s mobile medical unit in collaboration with a therapist and peer specialist.

  • Help expand access to care for individuals experiencing homelessness and those living in communities where transportation barriers limit access to healthcare.

  • Collaborate with clinical and recovery support staff to connect participants with appropriate medical, behavioral health, and recovery services.

  • Coordinate referrals and follow-up to support continuity of care and reduce barriers to treatment.

  • Provide or coordinate infectious disease screening, testing, and treatment as appropriate.

  • Assess participant eligibility for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and provide or coordinate services for interested and eligible participants.

  • Provide or coordinate recommended vaccinations, including Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, COVID-19, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, consistent with current clinical guidance.

  • Connect participants with ongoing primary care services to support comprehensive health management.

  • Provide or coordinate tobacco cessation support for participants who express interest.

  • Provide naloxone to every participant in accordance with program protocols, along with overdose prevention education and information about emerging synthetic opioids and associated risks.

  • Consult with the Medical Director regarding complex cases, treatment concerns, and clinical situations requiring additional guidance.

  • Follow established medical protocols, evidence-based treatment guidelines, applicable laws, and organizational policies.

  • Collaborate with therapists, peer specialists, nurses, and other members of the care team to promote coordinated, participant-centered services.

  • Maintain professional relationships and communicate effectively with internal teams and external healthcare providers.

  • Protect participant confidentiality and comply with applicable privacy, documentation, and healthcare regulations.

  • Complete timely, accurate, and comprehensive electronic health record (EHR) documentation for all services provided, including assessments, screenings, prescriptions, referrals, interventions, participant education, and follow-up.

  • Ensure documentation supports grant deliverables, billing requirements, quality measures, program evaluation, and required reporting.

  • Monitor performance indicators related to access to MOUD, participant retention, treatment outcomes, preventive care, and care coordination.

  • Participate in quality improvement activities and recommend strategies to improve service delivery, treatment engagement, and program effectiveness.

  • Support the accurate collection and reporting of data required by the opioid treatment grant.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program and eligible for the applicable state licensure requirements.

  • Current Michigan Nurse Practitioner license with prescriptive authority.

  • Active DEA registration and any required controlled-substance credentials authorizing the prescribing of buprenorphine, as applicable.

  • Current registration with the Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS).

  • Completion of required local, state, and federal MOUD-related training.

  • Minimum of one year of clinical experience; experience in addiction medicine, behavioral health, or substance use treatment is strongly preferred.

  • Proficiency with electronic health records and Microsoft Office applications.

  • Knowledge of evidence-based addiction treatment, recovery-oriented care, and medication management for opioid use disorder.

  • Strong clinical judgment, analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.

  • Ability to manage competing priorities, maintain accurate documentation, and exercise discretion when handling confidential information.

  • Demonstrated commitment to respectful, inclusive, person-centered care for individuals from diverse backgrounds and life experiences.

Work Environment

This position involves providing clinical services in a community-based behavioral healthcare setting and may include mobile medical outreach and work with individuals experiencing homelessness, substance use disorders, and barriers to healthcare access. The Nurse Practitioner must be comfortable collaborating with an interdisciplinary team and adapting to the needs of a community-based treatment program.

Equal Opportunity

Detroit Recovery Project values diversity and is committed to fostering an inclusive environment in which employees and participants are treated with dignity and respect. Employment decisions are made in accordance with applicable equal employment opportunity laws and organizational policies.
