Overview
We're hiring a mid-to-senior mechanical design engineer for a hardware team building autonomous vehicle and robotics systems in Sunnyvale, CA. You'll design the metal structures, sensor brackets and electronics enclosures that hold this hardware together, from small PCBA housings with heat sinks to large structural enclosures. Then you'll take them from 3D CAD to released 2D drawings. Structural and thermal judgment matter as much as CAD speed. This is a long-term contract position with plenty of work ahead.
What you'll do - Design enclosures, small and large, for electronics and sensor hardware, mostly in metal (sheet metal, machined, cast) with some plastic parts. - Design PCBA enclosures with heat sinks and thermal paths, at the box level rather than board level, so the electronics stay inside their temperature limits. - Design sensor brackets and mounts that hold alignment under vibration, shock and thermal loads. - Check designs with hand calculations and FEA (structural and thermal), and change the design based on what you find. - Build 3D parts and assemblies, and release 2D production drawings with GD&T to ASME Y14.5. - Work with mechanical, electrical and test engineers, and keep CAD data, revisions and documentation clean.
Must have - 5+ years designing mechanical hardware, such as enclosures, brackets or structures, that went to production. - Hands-on structural and thermal design: sizing parts for loads and stiffness, and designing heat paths and heat sinks for electronics. - Strong 3D CAD and 2D drawing skills with GD&T. CATIA V5/3DEXPERIENCE is preferred, and we'll consider SolidWorks, NX or Creo experts. - Design for manufacturing for sheet metal, machined parts and castings, with some molded plastics. - Examples of past work you can walk us through (a portfolio, drawings or a design you can describe in detail).
Nice to have - Advanced CATIA (V5 or 3DEXPERIENCE), used daily. - Automotive, EV, autonomous vehicle, robotics or drone hardware experience. - FEA tools such as ANSYS, Abaqus or the simulation tools built into CATIA, SolidWorks or NX. - PLM experience (Enovia, 3DEXPERIENCE, Teamcenter). - Test fixture design. - Comfortable working from incomplete specs at startup pace.
