Mechanical Design Engineer
About Us
Harmattan AI is a next-generation defense prime building autonomous and scalable defense systems. Following the close of a $200M Series B, valuing the company at $1.4 billion, we are expanding our teams and capabilities to deliver mission-critical systems to allied forces.
Our work is guided by clear values: building technologies with real-world impact, pursuing excellence in everything we do, setting ambitious goals, and taking on the hardest technical challenges. We operate in a demanding environment where rigor, ownership, and execution are expected.
About the Role
As Mechanical Design Engineer , you will play a critical role in establishing a complete development, testing, and production capability for warheads and safety, arming, and function (SAFing) devices. You will drive product design across munition systems, encompassing mechanical housings, casings, warhead assemblies, and mechanisms to support our autonomous defense platforms and maintain a competitive edge.
Responsibilities
CAD Design & Drafting: Lead mechanical design and detailed drafting for warhead assemblies, housings, and fuzing mechanisms using industry best practices.
Product Data & Configuration Management: Manage product data (PDM) and configuration across design cycles, maintaining clean engineering data packs and release documentation.
Prototype Assembly & Verification: Assemble mechanical prototypes, verify fit/function, and define assembly procedures for mission-representative environments.
Interface & Systems Integration: Own interface management with higher-level systems, drafting ICDs, MSDS, and packaging/marking specifications.
Thermal & Mechanical Analysis: Perform fundamental stress, thermal, and physical analysis based on operational requirements, including exposure, mechanical shock, and vibration.
R&D & Material Sourcing: Conduct research into advanced warheads and SAFing technologies; engage with suppliers to manage materials sourcing, non-conformances, and change requests.
Cross-Team Collaboration: Work hand-in-hand with energetics, simulation and analysis, electronics, and flight test teams to support hardware testing regimes and rapid iteration.
Candidate Requirements
Proven background in mechanical design drafting for military applications, ideally involving warheads, SAFing, or fuzing systems.
Demonstrated expertise with various production tooling and manufacturing processes (machining, pressing, stamping, milling, forging, casting, injection molding).
Solid understanding of military specifications, GD&T standards (ASME/ISO), material compatibility, and environmental survivability.
Hands-on experience running environmental and stress analyses (mechanical shock, vibration, thermal) on military systems.
Proficiency with Product Data Management (PDM) and configuration control workflows (e.g., Siemens Teamcenter).
Detail-oriented with exceptional documentation, organizational, and drafting standards skills.
Strong communication and collaborative skills, with a proactive approach to solving complex engineering challenges in a fast-paced environment
What We Offer
Opportunity to establish core mechanical design capability and elevate drafting standards within a growing engineering team.
Direct hands-on work spanning initial CAD concepts through to manufacturing and field testing.
Broad exposure to complex electromechanical hardware, structural housings, and safety-critical mechanisms.
We look forward to hearing how you can help shape the future of autonomous defense systems at Harmattan AI.
