Heavy Vehicle / Mobile Plant Mechanic

Downer is seeking an experienced Heavy Vehicle / Mobile Plant Mechanic to join our Eastern Creek operations. This is a diverse and rewarding role offering a mix of workshop-based maintenance and field service work, supporting critical asphalt and mobile plant assets across New South Wales.
Working on a highly specialised fleet, you'll play a key role in ensuring our equipment remains safe, reliable and operational across major infrastructure projects. If you enjoy variety, problem-solving and working on a range of heavy vehicles and plant equipment, we'd love to hear from you.
About the Role
This position is primarily day shift, with flexibility required for occasional night works, breakdown support and short-term travel as operational needs arise.
You'll be a hands-on mechanic who can work independently while also contributing to a skilled and safety-focused team environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Service, maintain and repair:
- Asphalt pavers
- Tack coaters
- Profilers
- Skid steers
- Steel and multi-tyre rollers
- Trucks and trailers
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems (12V–24V)
- Complete fabrication, refurbishment and component repair work, including:
- Refurbishing sweeper brooms
- Replacing cutting edges
- Repairing milling drums
- Attend field breakdowns and carry out onsite repairs when required
- Ensure all work is completed safely and in accordance with Downer's Zero Harm standards
- Work collaboratively within a skilled and safety-focused team
Shifts, Travel & Overtime
- Day Shift (majority): Monday to Friday, 6:00am – 2:30pm
- Night Shift (as required): Sunday to Thursday, 7:00pm – 3:30am
- 50% night shift loading
- Overtime opportunities available
- Rare weekend breakdown support when required
- Short-term travel across NSW, including occasional overnight stays (2–3 nights)
- Company vehicle may be provided for the right candidate
About You
- Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology, Mobile Plant Technology, or equivalent trade qualification
- Current C Class Driver Licence
- Experience maintaining and repairing heavy vehicles, mobile plant or civil construction equipment
- Strong diagnostic capability across hydraulic, mechanical and electrical systems
- Fabrication and repair experience
- Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
- Strong commitment to safety
Highly regarded:
- HR Licence
- Forklift Licence
- Auto electrical experience
- Experience within the asphalt, road construction or civil infrastructure sectors
