Mechanical Technician

Summary

Onsite mechanical technician inspects, repairs, and maintains industrial plant equipment, performs rigging and fabrication, and ensures safety compliance in a manufacturing facility.

Key Accountabilities

Mechanical Maintenance and Technical Support

  • Inspect, troubleshoot and repair all plant mechanical equipment as directed by superior.
  • Make periodic inspections of plant equipment and report its condition to the supervisor for further evaluation.
  • Regularly communicate interdepartmentally on the status of jobs, projected completion time, and the need (if any) for assistance.
  • Perform basic equipment rigging with supervision.
  • Perform advanced rebuild/retrofits of mechanical equipment (blowers, gear boxes, Centrifuges) and advanced industrial fabrication functions as needed.
  • Safely operate powered industrial vehicles.
  • Perform basic electrical maintenance functions and mechanical fabrication functions as needed.
  • Regularly respond to call-ins (nights, weekends, and holidays) for emergency mechanical equipment repair. This involves a greater-than-usual level of responsibility to bring the problem to resolution either by completing the repair or identifying and communicating with those in a position to do so.
  • Act as mechanical vendor liaison. Coordinate inspection and repair schedules, ensure parts availability, confirm the accuracy of bills of labor and materials, etc.
  • Given a specific area the technician should also be aware of replacement part status and notify the foreman of problem areas.
  • Use the plant maintenance software system to query for open emergency and planned mechanical maintenance jobs and to accurately and completely document work effort and job status.


Environmental Health & Safety

  • Maintain safe working conditions and practices within the department.
  • Participate / Conduct monthly safety meetings and employee training to achieve a zero (0) lost time injury record.
  • Perform work duties in accordance with Quality System Manual procedures.

Education
High School diploma or equivalent education

Experience

  • 5 years of experience in industrial mechanical maintenance.
  • Formal training or practical experience in repair and maintenance of mechanical devices.


Knowledge and skills

  • High level of mechanical aptitude is a must.
  • Knowledge of all plant operations in the area of responsibility.
  • Areas of competence include, but are not limited to: millwright, machinist, heavy equipment maintenance, pipe fitting and/or general maintenance.
  • Ability to read drawings to assemble and disassemble equipment.
  • Exposure to solvents and lubricants, dust and fumes as well as other substances.
  • Exposure to extreme environmental conditions.
  • Constant standing and walking.
  • Frequent lifting, climbing, reaching, pushing and pulling.
  • Occasional lifting of objects up to 100 lbs.
  • Basic computer skill (Microsoft Office)
