Summary:
The Medical Illustrator - Patient Education is an integral member of the 5thPort Patient Education team, responsible for creating accurate, engaging and accessible medical illustrations and contributing to the development of patient education content.
Working collaboratively with the Project Director and Patient Education Creators, this role helps develop patient education solutions from initial client consultation through final delivery. The Medical Illustrator brings specialized expertise in medical and scientific visualization while also contributing to scripts, storyboards, multimedia content and the overall patient education experience.
This is a collaborative and client-facing role within the Patient Education team. The Medical Illustrator will participate in client consultations, contribute ideas and recommendations, and work alongside other team members to translate complex medical and scientific information into content that helps patients and caregivers better understand conditions, procedures and treatment options.

What You’ll Do:
Medical Illustration & Visual Communication
- Create medically accurate illustrations and visual assets for patient education materials.
- Translate complex medical, anatomical and scientific concepts into clear and engaging visuals for patients and caregivers.
- Develop visual concepts, storyboards and multimedia assets for videos, digital brochures, animation and other patient education experiences.
- Conduct medical and scientific research to support content development and visual accuracy.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers, nurses and other subject matter experts to validate medical content.
- Apply strong visual storytelling principles to make healthcare information understandable and approachable for a non-medical audience.
- Explore and recommend new illustration styles, visualization techniques and technologies that can improve patient understanding and engagement.
Patient Education Team & Client Collaboration
- Work as an integrated member of the Patient Education team, collaborating with the Project Director and Patient Education Creators throughout the development of patient education solutions
- Participate in client consultations and meetings alongside the Project Director and Patient Education team.
- Develop and contribute to patient education scripts, working with Patient Education Creators to ensure medical accuracy, clarity and appropriate messaging for patients and caregivers.
- Help prepare for consultations by reviewing relevant background information, existing content and reference materials.
- Listen to client needs, questions and feedback to understand the intended audience and patient education objectives.
- Ask questions and contribute ideas during consultations and content discussions.
- Present and explain visual concepts, illustrations and creative recommendations when appropriate.
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals and subject matter experts to understand clinical information and translate it into effective patient-facing visuals.
- Work closely with Patient Education Creators on scripts and storyboards to ensure written, visual and animated content work together effectively.
- Incorporate feedback from clients, healthcare professionals and internal stakeholders while maintaining medical accuracy and content objectives.
- Communicate professionally and confidently with clients, healthcare professionals and internal team members.
- Build familiarity with client needs and contribute to a positive and responsive client experience.
Content Support
- Organize and maintain illustrations, reference materials and other creative assets.
- Upload approved illustrations, videos and other patient education content into 5thPort and designated content locations.
- Maintain appropriate file organization, naming conventions and current versions of creative assets.
- Assist with content updates, revisions and formatting as needed.
- Support other patient education content needs as required.
COMMUNICATION GOALS
- Deliver clear, accurate and visually engaging patient education content.
- Improve patient and caregiver understanding of medical conditions, procedures and treatment options.
- Simplify complex medical information without compromising accuracy.
- Help reduce the time and effort required by healthcare providers to educate patients.
- Create visual experiences that complement and strengthen written and multimedia patient education content.
- Communicate visual ideas and recommendations effectively with both healthcare and non-technical audiences.
MEDIA TYPES
Current Focus: Medical illustration, video, animation and digital patient education materials.
Future Scope: Interactive content, 3D visualization and emerging digital patient education experiences.

Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Medical Illustration, Biomedical Communications, Biomedical Visualization or a closely related graduate program is required
- Strong portfolio demonstrating medical/scientific illustration and visual communication skills.
- Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology and/or life sciences.
- Ability to translate complex medical concepts into clear visual information for a lay audience.
- Strong visual storytelling and creative problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite and relevant illustration, animation, video or multimedia tools.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Comfortable participating in client meetings, asking questions and discussing creative concepts.
- Comfortable collaborating directly with healthcare professionals, clients and internal team members.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Commitment to medical and scientific accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a collaborative environment.
Nice to Have
- Experience developing patient education or healthcare communications.
- Experience with animation, video, 3D visualization or interactive content.
- Previous client-facing experience or experience presenting creative work to others.
- Experience working with healthcare professionals or subject matter experts.
- Experience working with healthcare, life sciences or patient advocacy organizations.
- Experience working with digital content platforms or uploading and maintaining creative assets.
Occasional travel to client locations may be required.
Location & Work Schedule
This role is based in our Newark, Delaware office, conveniently located at 131 Continental Drive, Suite 409.
