The Medical Officer is responsible for the planning, supervision, and implementation of all medical and public health activities under the Street Medical Interventions (SMI) program. The Medical Officer ensures quality clinical care, community-based preventive interventions, supervision of field staff, accurate documentation, and effective coordination with internal and external stakeholders.

Qualification & Experience

• MBBS from a recognized institution
  

• Valid registration with the relevant Medical Council
  

• Minimum 2–3 years of experience in community health, public health, NGO, outreach, or primary care settings preferred
  

• Experience in maternal and child health, NCD management, nutrition, and community outreach preferred
  

• Good knowledge of government health systems and schemes
  

• Familiarity with digital data entry and reporting systems (preferably Zoho)
  

Working Hours

• 8 hours per day
  

• Flexible and on-call for emergencies, outreach visits, and urgent community requirements
  

Working Days

• 6 days a week
  

Roles and Responsibilities

1. Clinical Care and Diagnosis

1.1 Diagnose Health Conditions

• Assess and diagnose acute and chronic health conditions in the community, including diabetes, hypertension, respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, skin conditions, and other common illnesses.
  

• Conduct clinical examination and use appropriate diagnostic tools during field visits and camps.
  

1.2 Prescribe Treatment

• Prescribe suitable medications, therapies, and lifestyle modifications based on diagnosis.
  

• Ensure rational use of medicines and provide clear instructions to beneficiaries.
  

1.3 Order Diagnostic Tests

• Recommend and facilitate diagnostic investigations such as blood tests, urine tests, imaging, and other relevant investigations whenever required.
  

2. Health Screening, Nutrition and Vaccination

2.1 Conduct Health Screenings

• Lead or supervise community-level health screenings for:
  

• Maternal health
  

• Child health
  

• Nutrition status
  

• Hypertension and diabetes
  

• Other priority health conditions
  

2.2 Coordinate Nutritional Assessments

• Coordinate and organize nutritional assessments at regular intervals in communities and Micro Learning Centres under the branch.
  

• Ensure periodic growth monitoring, nutritional screening, MUAC measurement, height/weight monitoring, and identification of undernourished children.
  

2.3 Monitor Immunization Programs

• Ensure complete immunization coverage of children and monitor adherence to vaccination schedules.
  

• Follow up with caregivers and coordinate with local health facilities for missed vaccinations.
  

2.4 Ensure Intervention for Malnourished Children

• Initiate and ensure necessary interventions for all malnourished children and health-deprived populations identified during assessments.
  

• Ensure referral, nutritional counselling, supplementation, follow-up, and coordination with government services where necessary.
  

3. Preventive Health Education and Community Outreach

3.1 Provide Preventive Health Education

• Deliver health education to the community on disease prevention, nutrition, hygiene, sanitation, maternal care, child care, and healthy lifestyle practices.
  

3.2 Promote Healthy Lifestyle Practices

• Encourage healthy eating, physical activity, personal hygiene, tobacco cessation, and adherence to treatment.
  

3.3 Conduct Community Awareness Programs

• Organize and participate in awareness campaigns, health talks, school sessions, and community meetings on key health issues.
  

3.4 Train Field Workers and MLC Teachers

• Provide regular training and capacity-building to field-level workers and MLC teachers on:
  

• Basic health issues
  

• Maternal and child health
  

• Nutrition
  

• WASH
  

• NCDs
  

• Follow-up mechanisms
  

• Use of the Zoho application and documentation systems
  

4. Management of Acute and Chronic Conditions

4.1 Manage Acute Health Conditions

• Provide treatment and referral support for acute illnesses such as fever, diarrhea, respiratory infections, wounds, injuries, and other urgent health conditions.
  

4.2 Manage Chronic Diseases

• Monitor and manage chronic diseases including diabetes, hypertension, asthma, cardiovascular disease, and epilepsy.
  

• Ensure follow-up and medication adherence for all chronic disease patients.
  

4.3 Monitor Medication Adherence

• Ensure that patients with chronic diseases take medications regularly and receive timely follow-up.
  

5. Outreach Medical Visits

5.1 Conduct Street Outreach Visits

• Conduct regular outreach medical visits to streets and settlements across the city to address the primary health needs of pavement dwellers, homeless persons, and destitute populations.
  

• Provide on-site consultation, first aid, basic treatment, and referral services.
  

5.2 Ensure Referral Services

• Refer patients requiring higher care to hospitals, government facilities, or specialist services and ensure follow-up.
  

6. Referral and Continuity of Care

6.1 Refer Complex Cases

• Refer patients requiring advanced or specialized care to higher-level facilities.
  

6.2 Ensure Continuity of Care

• Track all referred patients and ensure continuity of treatment, follow-up, and compliance.
  

6.3 Monitor Referral Outcomes

• Follow up on referred cases and document treatment outcomes.
  

7. Supervision and Support of SMI Team

7.1 Supervise Staff Nurse and MLC Teachers

• Supervise and support Staff Nurses, MLC Teachers, and other field-level workers to ensure proper implementation of all health activities.
  

7.2 Monitor Team Performance

• Ensure effective functioning of the SMI team and plan duty arrangements for self and team members whenever required.
  

7.3 Monitor Follow-Up Activities

• Ensure that all required follow-ups for chronic diseases, maternal care, nutrition, immunization, and WASH are completed in a timely manner.
  

7.4 Conduct Regular Team Meetings

• Conduct regular meetings with field-level workers, MLC Teachers, SMI team members, State Coordinator, and National Coordinator to review activities, discuss challenges, and plan interventions.
  

8. Data Monitoring, Documentation and Reporting

8.1 Monitor Health, Nutrition and WASH Data

• Regularly monitor health data, nutritional data, and WASH-related data from the community and MLCs.
  

• Analyze the data and ensure appropriate interventions are taken based on findings.
