The Medical Support Assistant (MSA) works within the Community Care service line at the Iowa City VA Medical Center. The MSA performs clerical and administrative support in the coordination, care, and treatment provided to patients.

Assignments at this level include, but are not limited to: Tracking assigned workload for all of consults, results management, and traditional Community Care authorizations. Develop/maintain effective and efficient communication with the interdisciplinary team, and non-VA medical facilities. Participate in Care in the Community team huddles and team meetings to manage and plan flow and sequencing of work to meet the team and patient needs. Ensures the integrity of various databases, and data used in the management of administrative and customer service within the department. Understands and appropriately utilizes the Community Care programs, to include electronic medical records, scheduling software, Release of Information software, and other critical administrative programs Scheduling, rescheduling patient consults, and monitoring processes related to Care in the Community scheduling Accurately schedules the full spectrum of medical care including but is not limited to outpatient appointments, outpatient procedures, inpatient surgery, lab tests and imaging throughout all specialties. Communicate to the patient and pre- appointment requirements or instructions. Clearly communicate appointment care details to the patient or family. Communicate to the Ordering Provider or Nurse if instructions are of nature that clinical review is required to determine appropriateness for the patient. Identify and communicate patient concerns or needs recognized during communications regarding upcoming Community Care. Correctly links Care in the Community consults and appointments within the scheduling package to ensure information is available for others scheduling care in the future. Work Schedule: Intermittent employment is defined as non-fulltime employment in which employees serve under an excepted or competitive service appointment, hours to be discussed during interview, however will be up to 32 hours/week. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade). Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior military service experience. Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child. Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66. Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement) Telework: Not available.
