# Backend Engineer ## Job Summary This is a hands-on backend engineering role on a small team focused on building and maintaining stable backend systems as usage grows and enterprise customers onboard. The role requires ownership of production systems, thoughtful consideration of failure modes, and practical tradeoffs around reliability, speed, and cost. The engineer will contribute to scaling backend infrastructure, improving observability, strengthening testing and deployment pipelines, and supporting enterprise deployment and compliance needs. ## Responsibilities - Build and improve backend systems that are reliable, maintainable, and scalable. - Own cloud infrastructure and deployments across Amazon Web Services (AWS), managing tradeoffs related to cost, speed, and reliability. - Set up and enhance observability tools to detect issues early and understand production behavior. - Strengthen testing frameworks and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines to enable rapid, safe releases. - Optimize database performance, data flows, and system behavior under load. - Manage background jobs, queues, retries, and operational details critical to real-world systems. - Prepare systems for enhanced security and compliance requirements as the company grows. - Support on-premise deployment needs for enterprise customers. ## Qualifications - 3–5 years of backend development experience working on production systems. - Hands-on infrastructure experience with AWS or other cloud environments. - Strong Python backend development skills with an emphasis on clean, maintainable code. - Familiarity with distributed systems, containerization, queues, and practical software scaling. - A strong production mindset, including monitoring, failure case analysis, reliability, and cost considerations. - Demonstrated ownership mentality; proactive in fixing issues and improving systems. ## Preferred Skills - Experience scaling applications across multiple services and infrastructure components. - Expertise in PostgreSQL tuning, query optimization, and connection management. - Knowledge of queues, Redis, Celery, publish/subscribe systems, and API design. - Understanding of authentication, networking, private infrastructure, and basic security principles. - Proficiency in unit, integration, and API testing methodologies. - Experience with monitoring, logging, alerting, and debugging in production environments. - Familiarity with CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions, AWS CodePipeline, or CodeDeploy. ## Experience - 3 to 4 years of relevant backend development experience in production environments. - Practical experience managing cloud infrastructure and deployments. ## Environment - Work location: In-person at Bangalore, HSR Layout. - Collaborative small team environment focused on backend system stability and scalability. ## Salary - Industry-grade pay. - Routine performance-based salary hikes. - Pre-seed round Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs). ## Tech Stack - Python (FastAPI) - PostgreSQL - Celery - AWS services including RDS, EC2, Lambda, CloudWatch, CodePipeline - Docker, Redis, Sentry, Supabase, GitHub Actions, Next.js ## This Role May Not Be a Fit If - You prefer working only on greenfield projects rather than improving existing production systems. - You are uncomfortable owning uptime or responding to production incidents. - You require everything to be perfectly planned before starting work. - You prefer to stay strictly within narrow role boundaries without cross-functional ownership.
