Microsoft Dynamics AX Developer
As a Senior AX Developer, you are outgoing, dedicated and responsible. You take the initiative, take ownership of your work, and communicate technical information clearly at every level, from fellow developers to business stakeholders. Your approach is analytical, proactive and pragmatic, and you apply your problem-solving skills in line with ITIL processes.
You have in-depth knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 (ERP) development and customization, and turn it into pragmatic, sustainable, high-quality solutions that meet customer requirements. Just as importantly, you are a technical decision-maker: you set the technical direction for your work, weigh options and risks, and help the team and our customers make the right calls. You also contribute to assessments, estimates and recommendations for prioritizing change requests and defect fixes.
Our everyday work is characterized by an open and honest atmosphere, and we put emphasis on a challenging yet fun working environment. We pay significant attention to job satisfaction and to personal and professional development. Your responsibilities:
Design and delivery Translate customer requirements into quality technical designs and solutions. Implement medium-to-complex maintenance and development tasks, involving other team members as needed.
Develop software according to clean-code principles and industry best practices. Write and review code, documentation and other project deliverables. Fix bugs promptly and troubleshoot complex ERP problems through to root cause, including AOS, AIF and database issues.
Plan, package and carry out deployments and releases across development, test and production environments, including rollback planning. Define development timelines, time estimates and implementation plans. Technical leadership and decision-making
Own the technical vision for your projects: keep it up to date as requirements change and make sure every team member understands it. Make and document key technical and architectural decisions and be accountable for their outcome. Evaluate new tools, technologies and approaches through proof-of-concept prototypes and recommend whether to adopt them.
Review the code and designs of other developers and coach them to grow, including making sure technical decisions are made well at every level of the team. Identify and communicate technical risk and technical debt and recommend how to mitigate it. Consulting
Advise stakeholders on the cost, benefit and risk of project and design decisions. Communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, including in cross-border and multicultural teams. Quality and governance
Develop standards, policies, procedures and systems that ensure software development and implementation are consistently high in quality and conform to industry-recognized standards. Audit projects to ensure adherence to company standards. Technical decision-making competencies:
As a senior member of the team, we expect you to demonstrate the following: Architectural judgement: Chooses between configuration and customisation; places changes in the right layer, keeps SYS-layer changes to a minimum, and isolates and documents customisations so solutions stay upgradable and maintainable rather than quick fixes.
Trade-off analysis: Weighs build vs. buy vs. reuse (standard features, ISV solutions), and performance, cost, risk and time-to-deliver, and can explain the reasoning behind the choice. Decision-making under uncertainty:
Decides with incomplete information, validates assumptions with proof-of-concepts, and knows when to escalate or seek a second opinion. Integration and data design: Selects the right integration pattern (real-time vs. batch; AIF document services, web services, file or message-based; middleware such as BizTalk or Azure Service Bus) with attention to error handling, volumes, security and monitoring.
Performance and quality ownership: Diagnoses complex performance and data issues, sets technical standards, and holds code reviews and quality gates to them, including making the call to refactor, defer or reject. Risk and technical-debt management:
Identifies, quantifies and communicates technical risk and debt to the team and customer, and recommends when to pay it down. Customer-facing advice: Presents options with cost, benefit and risk in business language, and recommends a course of action the customer can approve with confidence.
Accountability and influence: Owns the outcome of technical decisions, documents them (e.g. decision records), aligns the team behind them, and revisits them openly when facts change. Mentoring and enabling others:
Coaches’ developers so that sound technical decisions are made at every level of the team, not only by the senior. Technical competencies: Beyond general development skills, we expect hands-on depth in the following areas of Dynamics AX 2009:
AX development and customization Customizing and extending AX in MorphX across the application object tree (AOT): tables, forms, classes, queries, views, maps, enums, EDTs, menus, reports and workflows. Strong X++ development using the standard frameworks (RunBase, batch jobs, number sequences, query framework, SysTableLookup, and the Dialog and Args classes).
Layer-based development (SYS, GLS, VAR, CUS, USR and their patch layers): knowing which layer to customize, how to keep customizations isolated, and how to resolve conflicts using compare tools. Data import and export, data migration and data cleansing using the standard AX tools, Excel integration and custom X++ or SQL scripts. Workflow and alerts, and security design with user groups, security keys, configuration keys and record-level security.
Enterprise Portal and role center customization using ASP.NET, C# and Visual Studio. AOS and environment management Installing, configuring and troubleshooting Application Object Servers (AOS), including AOS clusters, load balancing, batch server configuration and service accounts.
Monitoring and tuning AOS health: tracing, the Windows event log and performance counters, client/server calls and memory usage, and caching behavior. Managing the AX client and configuration utility, . NET Business Connector, Enterprise Portal and related components across environments.
AIF and integration Designing and supporting Application Integration Framework (AIF) integrations: inbound and outbound ports, document services, endpoints, schemas and transformations. Working with AIF adapters and transport (file system, MSMQ, HTTP/web services via IIS and the BizTalk adapter), and managing the AIF queue, exceptions and error handling.
Consuming and exposing web services, and working with XML, XSD and XSLT. Using the . NET Business Connector and COM/.
NET interop to integrate AX with external applications. Deployment and release management Moving customizations between environments using XPO exports and imports and application object (AOD) layer files, with label files and proper object ID/layer handling.
Managing full application compiles, database synchronization and AOS restarts so that deployments are repeatable and low risk. Applying kernel and application hotfixes, rollups and service packs, and performing code upgrades and data upgrades between AX versions. Deploying reports, workflows and Enterprise Portal components, with a documented release checklist and a rollback plan.
Version control and work-item tracking: MorphX version control integrated with source control, and Azure DevOps (or equivalent) for builds, work items and release tracking. Database, performance and reporting SQL Server: query tuning, indexing, execution plans, locking and blocking analysis, TempDB, and maintenance jobs; experience with Azure-hosted environments is welcome.
Performance diagnosis using the AX code profiler and SQL tracing tools, finding and fixing the root cause. Report development and deployment with MorphX reports and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS). Minimum requirements
Relevant Bachelor’s degree or higher, or equivalent practical experience, with at least 5 years of software development experience in Microsoft-based ERP, including Dynamics AX 2009.
