Position Overview

The Middle School Athletics Coach is responsible for leading a competitive, educational, and inclusive athletic program for CAIS student-athletes. The coach will develop individual and team skills while promoting effort, accountability, teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal growth.

The coach must uphold the CAIS Athletics philosophy and create an environment in which student-athletes are appropriately challenged, supported, and encouraged to represent CAIS with integrity.

Seasonal Commitment

  • Approximately 8–10 weeks, depending on playoff eligibility
  • Two after-school practices per week
  • Weekday games and competitions
  • Games may be hosted in the CAIS Gym or at opponent schools throughout San Francisco
  • Attendance at all scheduled practices, games, and team meetings
  • Transportation to and from games must be provided or arranged by the coach

Essential Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead organized practice plans that support individual and team development.
  • Teach sport-specific fundamentals, strategies, rules, and game concepts.
  • Establish clear expectations for attendance, effort, behavior, communication, and sportsmanship.
  • Create an inclusive team culture that supports athletes of varying experience and ability levels.
  • Prepare game plans, lineups, substitutions, and competitive strategies.
  • Provide athletes with clear instruction and constructive feedback.
  • Promote accountability, leadership, teamwork, perseverance, and respect.
  • Ensure that playing-time and team-role decisions are made consistently and appropriately.
  • Prioritize athlete safety and follow all injury, concussion, and emergency procedures.
  • Supervise student-athletes before, during, and after practices and competitions.
  • Communicate schedules, expectations, and team updates with athletes, families, and the Athletic Director.
  • Monitor student-athlete attendance, behavior, and academic eligibility when applicable.
  • Maintain and properly store school uniforms and athletic equipment.
  • Report injuries, conflicts, behavioral concerns, or significant incidents to the Athletic Director.
  • Attend required coaching meetings and professional-development sessions.
  • Represent CAIS professionally when interacting with athletes, families, officials, and opposing schools.
