DESCRIPTION

Working under the direction of the Coordinator of Secondary Mathematics, the Mathematics Specialist promotes equity and access to on-grade level curriculum by providing focused intervention, monitoring student progress, planning collaboratively, engaging in mathematics professional learning, and communicating with families.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must meet all the following qualifications, listed below, to be considered for the vacancy.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an applicable field of education.

Certification/Licensure:

  • Meets the Maryland State Department of Education licensure requirements for Middle School Mathematics 4-9 OR Mathematics 7-12

Experience:

Three (3) years of experience teaching mathematics curriculum to include:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective research-based Mathematics Teaching Practices (NCTM, 2014).

  • Evidence of a deep understanding of mathematics content standards and the Standards for Mathematical Practice (NGA Center & CCSSO, 2010).

  • Evidence of the ability to use data to plan and facilitate differentiated instruction and high-leverage intervention techniques to meet the needs of all learners.

  • Evidence of the ability to modify instructional resources to meet the needs of targeted learners.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Education or a related field.

  • Evidence of active participation in mathematics professional learning and initiatives.

  • Experience developing and delivering mathematics intervention

ESSENTIAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides Tier II and Tier III interventions to support, supplement and extend classroom mathematics instruction.

  • Plans interventions using approved, research-based resources.

  • Works collaboratively with teachers and instructional staff to plan and coordinate intervention.

  • Collaborates with staff and administration to schedule and manage intervention plans.

  • Collects, records, and reports data to identify student needs, set intervention goals, and to monitor intervention progress.

  • Participates in job-embedded professional learning to enhance knowledge of mathematics teaching, knowledge of mathematics pedagogy and intervention, and to grow professional practice to provide high-quality mathematics interventions.

  • Works as a mathematics advocate for students, families, and community by communicating mathematics course pathways, instructional and intervention strategies, expectations of mathematics instructional standards, and productive dispositions about learning and doing mathematics.

  • Assists in developing, selecting, and managing intervention resources to support the HCPSS Secondary Mathematics Program.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be included in further evaluation. Interviews will be limited to those applicants who, in addition to meeting the basic requirements, have experience and education which most closely match the position qualifications and the needs of the school system.

EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION

Compensation

This is a 10-month per year position in the Howard County Educators Association (HCEA) employee bargaining unit. The current salary range for this position is on the 10-Month teacher salary scale. Actual placement will be in accordance with the salary procedures of the Howard County Public School System and the HCEA Master Agreement which considers relevant prior experience. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, this position is exempt from overtime.

Retirement

Membership in the Maryland State Retirement Agency (MSRA) pension plan is a mandatory condition of employment for all employees who meet the eligibility and membership criteria defined in the State Personnel and Pensions Article and the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR). A qualifying employee cannot reject membership, nor can an ineligible employee elect membership. The annual contribution to the pension plan will be 7% of an employee’s annual salary.

All employees, regular and temporary, must be fingerprinted, have a criminal background investigation completed, and successfully complete the Maryland Employment History Review, pursuant to Section 6-113.2 of the Education Article, Annotated Code of Maryland. In addition, some positions will require completion of a physical examination and/or drug testing.
