Middle/Senior Backend Geometry Engineer (C++, Mesh Processing) — orthoeye.digital
orthoeye.digital Middle/Senior Backend Geometry Engineer (C++, Mesh Processing) — orthoeye.digital
Summary
Backend geometry engineer owning the C++ mesh-processing layer of a web platform for orthodontic clinics: repairing and remeshing uploaded 3D jaw scans, cutting them into teeth and gingiva, and later building orthodontic appliance geometry, running headless on Linux Docker workers alongside Python and Node.js services.
🚀 Project Description
orthoeye.digital builds a web platform for orthodontic clinics. Doctors upload 3D intraoral scans of the upper and lower jaw. The platform prepares the scans, splits them into teeth and gingiva, and gives Doctors tools for diagnosis and treatment planning.
This role owns the backend geometry: the mesh processing that runs on our servers between scan upload and the clinical tools. A separate team works on the machine learning models (segmentation, landmarks). You use their output, but you do not train models.
Stack: Angular + Three.js SPA, Node.js/Express API, Python services, native geometry code in C++, Docker on Linux workers.
✅ You are:
A Middle or Senior engineer with commercial experience in computational geometry or mesh processing
Strong in modern C++ (C++17 or later): memory, performance, profiling, building native libraries
Have hands-on experience with triangle meshes: half-edge or similar structures, topology, normals, boundaries, non-manifold cases
Have implemented or integrated algorithms such as mesh repair, hole filling, remeshing, decimation, Boolean operations, offsetting, or cutting by a plane or a curve
Have used at least one geometry library in real work (CGAL, OpenMesh, libigl, VCG, Open3D, a commercial SDK, or similar)
Good at the math behind it: linear algebra, spatial data structures (BVH, k-d tree), numeric precision and tolerances
Can write tests for geometry code: fixtures, tolerance checks, regression checks
➕ Will be a plus:
Experience with Polygonica or MeshLib
Python, including C++ bindings (pybind11 or nanobind), numpy, trimesh
Background in dental CAD/CAM, orthodontics, medical 3D, or 3D printing
Contour projection onto surfaces, geodesic paths, signed distance fields, rigid registration (ICP)
Evaluation of third-party SDKs: benchmarks, test sets, licence terms, headless deployment
Docker, Linux, CMake, CI for native code
Some Node.js/TypeScript, to read how the API calls your services
Comfortable working with AI platforms and developer tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, or Codex
♟️ What We Expect from You:
Own geometry decisions from start to end: choose the approach, prove it on test data, ship it
Set clear tolerances and quality checks, and say plainly when an operation cannot meet them
Make practical decisions that help us launch faster without unnecessary overengineering
Use modern AI tools, frameworks, and approaches to work faster and more effectively
Be comfortable working in an evolving product with changing priorities and early-stage ambiguity
🔑 Responsibilities:
Сompare two commercial mesh processing SDKs on the same test set and help the team select one. Build the test corpus, the test harness and the gate tests, write the decision record, and write the adapter for the selected SDK
Build scan preparation operations: inspect and repair meshes, remesh and decimate, cut by a plane or a contour, extrude a boundary and build a model base, smooth a region within limits
Build segmentation finalization: project tooth contours onto the jaw surface, cut the mesh into labelled teeth and gingiva, keep the labels after remeshing
Second half of the year: geometry for orthodontic appliances (Boolean operations, offset and shell thickness, exterior envelope, distance and contact queries, registration of two surfaces)
Make each operation run headless on Linux workers, with clear inputs, outputs and error reports
Write tests with fixtures and tolerance checks for each operation
Actively collaborate with the tech lead, the ML team, and the frontend developers of the 3D viewers
Utilize AI to review pull requests and contribute to engineering best practices
