Description

Mission Operations Specialist – Ground Systems

Status: Full Time, Exempt

Location: Moriarty, NM
Reports to: Senior Ground Systems Integrator

Who Are We:

Sceye is a high-growth technology company, building the next generation of instant communications, imaging, and remote sensing infrastructure through stratospheric platforms. Our lighter-than-air high-altitude platform systems (LTA HAPS) are capable of maintaining position over an operational area in the stratosphere (altitudes of 18 – 21km). They can carry multiple telecommunications, imaging, and remote sensing payloads, providing unique functionality, cost, environmental and societal advantages.

Our customers & partners include some of the largest global telecommunications companies, infrastructure operators, climate researchers, civil and defense agencies. At Sceye, we aim high, and we want you to join us at the stratospheric edge of innovation. As part of our mission-driven team, you will contribute to building breakthrough technologies that are changing the way we connect and observe the world. We are looking for individuals who bring not only deep expertise but also bold vision and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

About the Position:

Sceye is seeking a Mission Operations Specialist - Ground Systems to deploy, integrate, configure, verify, operate, troubleshoot, and sustain mission-critical ground systems used for HAPS testing and global operations. The role provides primary technical depth in fielded ground system capability while maintaining secondary qualification in mission execution, test support, mission readiness, and operational surge activities.

This is a junior, hands-on role spanning Linux-based computers, operator workstations, networks, mission applications, telemetry interfaces, RF equipment, data logging, time synchronization, storage, power, cabling, and deployable field hardware. The Specialist executes approved architectures and baselines, supports integration and readiness activities, and coordinates complex issues with the Senior Ground Systems Integrator, Ground Systems Engineer, Software, Enterprise IT, and Mission Operations. The role does not independently establish architecture or approve engineering design changes.

What You Will Do:

The Mission Operations Specialist – Ground Systems position will be a multi-functional role. We are looking for a positive, highly motivated professional with a strong work ethic, a collaborative and open-minded approach, and the humility and drive to work hard, continuously learn, and contribute beyond their primary area of expertise wherever the mission requires.

Ground System Deployment and Integration

  • Assist with assembly, configuration, integration, checkout, packing, deployment, installation, teardown, and redeployment of approved Ground Control Station configurations
  • Integrate servers, Linux workstations, network devices, storage, RF and telemetry interfaces, Operator displays, communications equipment, power distribution, UPS equipment, cabling, and supporting field hardware
  • Replicate approved ground system baselines for additional HAPS, missions, sites, training environments, and test configurations

Configuration, Verification, and Acceptance

  • Apply approved configurations to Linux systems, network devices, Operator stations, remote nodes, mission applications, and supporting infrastructure
  • Assist with integration, checkout, acceptance, regression, and operational-readiness procedures
  • Verify telemetry flow, network connectivity, communications, time synchronization, logging, storage, user access, remote connectivity, and Operator functionality
  • Collect and organize logs, screenshots, test results, configuration data, and other objective evidence required for acceptance and troubleshooting
  • Maintain inventories, equipment assignments, network diagrams, cable maps, build records, software and hardware versions, and deployment records

Troubleshooting and Sustainment

  • Assist with intermediate troubleshooting of ground system hardware, Linux services, networking, mission applications, data interfaces, telemetry, RF equipment, and Operator workstations
  • Systematically isolate faults to equipment, service, interface, configuration, network path, power source, or external dependency
  • Reproduce reported problems in integration or test environments when practical and document symptoms, actions, results, workarounds, and final resolution
  • Coordinate complex software, automation, architectural, cybersecurity, or design issues with the responsible technical authority
  • Perform preventive maintenance, spares management, lifecycle support, and readiness restoration for fielded systems

Operational Readiness and Mission Support

  • Assist with ground system readiness checks before simulations, tests, deployments, and live missions
  • Verify availability and configuration of required hardware, software, networks, communications, documentation, tools, spares, and support equipment
  • Provide ground system support during mission setup, checkout, shift turnover, live operations, maintenance, and recovery from outages
  • Perform HAPS Operator or other assigned Mission Operations duties when qualified, current, and designated
  • Support remote sites and distributed operations while maintaining escalation paths to centralized technical and operational authorities

Standardization, Training, and Improvement

  • Create and maintain installation instructions, configuration guides, checkout procedures, troubleshooting references, deployment checklists, and sustainment records
  • Standardize labeling, cabling, equipment layouts, packing, inventories, readiness evidence, and field practices across sites
  • Support scripted tests, automation, validation tooling, and data collection with the Ground Systems Engineer

What We Are Looking For:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Advanced hands-on ability with Linux systems, Ethernet networking, IP addressing, managed switches, remote access, cabling, racks, field hardware, and systematic troubleshooting
  • Ability to integrate and sustain mission-critical systems using approved designs, configuration baselines, and technical procedures
  • Working knowledge of telemetry, RF communications, logging, data storage, time synchronization, operator workstations, and distributed-system dependencies
  • Ability to distinguish authorized configuration work from changes requiring technical-authority or configuration-control approval
  • Strong technical-writing and documentation skills for diagrams, build records, troubleshooting notes, checklists, and acceptance evidence
  • Ability to work safely around electrical equipment, racks, antennas, power distribution, UPS systems, fiber, copper cabling, and field enclosures
  • Ability to coordinate effectively across Mission Operations, Software, Enterprise IT, Safety, and external site personnel
  • Ability to lead small integration and deployment efforts while remaining hands-on
  • Strong attention to detail when handling safety-critical content, records, and controlled documents
  • Ability to learn unfamiliar HAPS systems, mission software, communications systems, procedures, and operational concepts

Required Qualifications:

  • Four or more years of experience assembling, configuring, integrating, operating, maintaining, or troubleshooting technical systems in aviation, aerospace, telecommunications, field service, IT, defense, or mission-critical operations
  • Demonstrated experience with Linux-based systems and command-line environments
  • Working knowledge of Ethernet networking, IP addressing, cabling, switches, and connectivity troubleshooting
  • Experience with Bash, Python, Git, containers, virtualization, infrastructure automation, or configuration-management tools
  • Experience executing technical procedures, integration tests, acceptance checks, or system-readiness activities
  • Experience maintaining configuration records, equipment inventories, diagrams, build records, or comparable technical documentation
  • Ability to lift, move, install, and safely work around deployable technical equipment consistent with applicable workplace requirements
  • Ability to travel and work nonstandard schedules during deployments, tests, and live missions
  • Ability to work in a safety-focused and procedurally disciplined operational environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, electronics, networking, aviation technology, engineering technology, or a related field, or equivalent advanced hands-on experience
  • Experience supporting ground control systems, UAV operations, aerospace testing, telemetry networks, or mission-control environments
  • Familiarity with VLANs, firewalls, VPNs, managed switches, remote access, and cybersecurity-controlled environments
  • Experience with RF communications, software-defined radios, antennas, telemetry, precision timing, or radio-network equipment
  • Experience with equipment racks, power distribution, UPS systems, fiber, copper cabling, environmental controls, and deployable enclosures
  • Prior military, aviation, telecommunications, field-service, or remote-site operations experience
