Mobile Developer (React Native)
Summary
Melyn builds an integrated platform helping First Nations communities in Canada manage housing, infrastructure, governance, and funding. As Mobile Developer you'll own a staff app and a citizen-facing React Native app, shipping features end to end with TypeScript, Expo/bare RN, native iOS/Android work, and Fastlane/EAS releases.
melyn is a platform built for First Nations communities across Canada. We help Nations manage housing, infrastructure, governance, and economic development through one integrated system, so they can secure funding, lead projects, and drive sustainable growth. We are partnering with new Nations every week.
We build everything in alignment with OCAP (Ownership, Control, Access, Possession), the First Nations principles governing how Indigenous data is collected, stored, used, and protected. OCAP is not a checkbox here: it shapes where data lives and who can access it.
About the Role
You will own melyn's mobile portfolio: a staff app used by Nations staff for day-to-day work, and a citizen-facing companion app. You will ship features, keep builds and CI healthy, run releases through Fastlane and EAS, and raise the bar on testing and performance across both apps.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Ship features end to end: approvals, housing management, grant matching, citizen requests, and offline-capable data entry
- Own the native layer on both platforms (Gradle/Kotlin and Xcode/CocoaPods/Swift), including native module integration and upgrades
- Run releases through Fastlane and EAS to TestFlight and Play Console
- Maintain shared monorepo packages so everything stays consistent
- Keep CI green, grow unit test coverage, and add device-level smoke tests
- Profile and optimize startup time, list and animation performance, and build size
- Set up production monitoring and triage crashes and API issues
Tech Stack
React Native (bare CLI and Expo) with TypeScript, in a pnpm monorepo. Offline-first local storage, React Query and Zustand for state, REST and WebSockets against a Node.js backend on AWS with PostgreSQL. Releases through Fastlane and EAS, CI on GitHub Actions.
Desired Candidate Profile
- 3+ years shipping React Native apps to both the App Store and Play Store, including at least one bare RN CLI app and one Expo/EAS app carried through release
- Ability to debug below the JS layer: Gradle failures, Kotlin/Swift stack traces, native module linking, CocoaPods conflicts
- Hands-on with signing and store submission on both platforms: keystores, provisioning profiles, EAS credentials
- Comfortable working in a pnpm monorepo with shared internal packages
Good to Have
- Hands-on experience building or integrating RAG/AI systems and LLMs, including local and self-hosted models
- Familiarity with vector databases
- Performance profiling on real devices; Reanimated/worklets optimization
- Maestro or Detox end-to-end testing; offline-sync and conflict-resolution patterns
- Experience working with Indigenous communities or public-sector organizations
Perks and Benefits
- Competitive salary
- Fully remote and flexible: work where and how you are most productive
- Direct collaboration with leadership, without layers of bureaucracy
- Build technology that creates lasting, meaningful impact for First Nations communities across Canada
- An early seat at a Service-as-a-Software company, in a category that is still being defined
Hiring Process: Technical interview (60 min, coding plus system design), followed by a founder chat (30 min).
