Position Summary
Deliver patient care as a member of the MOHS surgical team. Assists the Mohs surgeon by providing and controlling surgical instruments and equipment during Mohs stages. Ensures that instruments and supplies are cleaned, sterilized and available as needed. Provides hands on assisting with Mohs procedures and wound closures/repairs. Is the patient advocate. Assists with clean-up of exam rooms and commons areas.

All providers and staff must preserve the integrity and confidentiality of protected health information (PHI). Team members may access patient charts, demographic information, and when necessary financial information in order to provide quality care. A confidentiality agreement must be signed prior to receiving access.
Primary Responsibilities
- Escort patients to examination rooms
- Obtain a history of present illness/concerns, obtain HPI and any updates
- Do a review of systems with the patient
- Perform Mohs Pre-op history with patient
- Take past, family, and social history
- Update medical history, medication, and medication allergies
- Prepare patients for examination and/or procedures
- Assist the Mohs surgeon/provider in completing Mohs layers and obtaining hemostasis as well as patient comfort between layers
- Complete Mohs repair and suturing with the Mohs surgeon/provider and apply dressings to the surgical site(s)
- Complete patient charting/note, chief complaint, and review of systems, exam, assessment, and procedure/treatment
- Educate patients, so they understand the use of medications and post-op care
- Write prescriptions, review the medication with a patient and answer any questions
- Contact pharmacy as necessary
- Obtain pathology results from abs and distribute reports to providers
- Perform wound checks and additional patient education as necessary
- Perform suture removals, and provide instructions on post-op wound care
- Give injections as needed
- Take phone calls and return phone messages
- Call patients with pathology results
- Make referrals and coordinate with other specialties
- Manage prescription refill requests
- Set up medical supplies and equipment for surgeries and procedures
- Enter biopsy numbers, and complete path paperwork
- Assist provider with patient consultations
- Assist provider with biopsies, excisions, and surgeries
- Prepare and fill surgery anesthetic vials and syringes
- Complete Mohs maps
- Complete temperature checks for refrigerators and other equipment as designated by CLIA
- Verify inventory, and if needed, place the item(s) on the order list
- Clean and prepare the exam room after each patient visit
- Prepare instrument packs/guaze packs and sterilize using autoclave
- Restock exam, surgical, and treatment areas
- Pick up and keep countertops organized and cleaned
- Empty and wipe down trash receptacles, both contaminated and non-contaminated, following OSHA guidelines
- Vacuum carpet outside exam rooms
- Clean and maintain autoclave
- Wash, fold and put away laundry
- Check and change biohazard bags and boxes as needed
- Monitor the current status of the work and projects for the Mohs team and Clinic Operation Manager-Mohs
- Attend meetings or conferences as assigned and reports on major points and actions resolved or to be taken
- Handle various matters involving contact with various staff that occurs between the clinician, lab, and Pathologist
- Initiate prior authorizations with patient insurance when requested
- Communicate with billing regarding the correct charges for Mohs services and any consults
- Prepares various documents or correspondence and handles confidential matters in accordance with Heartland Dermatology policy and procedures
- Ensure equipment operation, calls for repairs, maintains equipment inventories, and evaluates new equipment and techniques
- Performs other duties as assigned
Job Qualifications

- Valid driver’s license.
- Current CPR certification.
- Professional appearance including scrubs or professional attire.
- High school graduate
- Graduate of an MA program or comparable experience (MA or DermTech certification required within one year of employment with fees and curriculum provided by HDC)

Physical Requirements
- Varied activities including standing, walking, reaching, bending, lifting. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient’s manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
- Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 100 pounds.
- Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. Multiple demands and deadlines can trigger stress.
