SUMMARY:
As a Meals on Wheels Driver, you’ll help provide nutritious meals and meaningful connection to individuals throughout our community. This position is responsible for safely and efficiently delivering meals along assigned routes, following established delivery and food safety procedures, and providing friendly, respectful service to each participant. Because drivers may be a regular point of contact for individuals receiving meals, reliability, attentiveness, and compassion are important parts of this role.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Safely and efficiently deliver meals to participants along assigned Meals on Wheels routes.
Load, organize, transport, and unload meals and delivery supplies according to established procedures.
Verify assigned routes, meal counts, delivery instructions, and other information before leaving for deliveries.
Follow established routes and delivery schedules to ensure meals arrive safely and within appropriate timeframes.
Maintain appropriate food temperatures and follow established food safety procedures during transportation and delivery.
Handle meals carefully to maintain food quality, packaging, and presentation.
Follow established procedures for unsuccessful delivery attempts, participant concerns, emergencies, or changes in a participant’s circumstances.
Observe and communicate concerns encountered during deliveries according to Meals on Wheels procedures, while respecting participant privacy and confidentiality.
Provide friendly, respectful, and professional service when interacting with participants, family members, caregivers, volunteers, team members, and community partners.
Maintain participant confidentiality and appropriately handle route sheets and other participant information.
Communicate route delays, delivery issues, safety concerns, or other problems promptly to the appropriate team member.
Complete required delivery records, route documentation, and other program paperwork accurately and timely.
Follow safe driving practices, traffic laws, and Active Generations vehicle and transportation policies at all times.
Conduct required vehicle checks and promptly report accidents, damage, maintenance needs, or safety concerns.
Maintain the cleanliness and organization of vehicles and delivery equipment.
Safely operate carts, coolers, insulated carriers, and other equipment used for meal delivery.
Assist with preparing delivery materials, organizing routes, loading meals, and other Meals on Wheels operations as needed.
Adapt to route changes, participant updates, weather conditions, staffing needs, and other changes that may occur throughout the workday.
Assist other drivers, volunteers, and Nutrition team members as needed to ensure all scheduled meals are delivered.
Represent Active Generations positively and professionally while working throughout the community.
Perform additional duties as assigned by program management.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED preferred.
Valid driver’s license required.
Previous delivery, transportation, customer service, senior services, or similar experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Strong customer service, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to follow assigned routes, schedules, delivery instructions, and established procedures. Dependable and punctual with the ability to work independently while remaining connected to the broader Nutrition team. Comfortable interacting with older adults and individuals with varying needs and abilities. Demonstrates patience, compassion, good judgment, and professionalism. Ability to recognize and appropriately communicate participant or safety concerns without exceeding the scope of the position. Comfortable using basic technology or mobile devices for navigation, communication, and delivery documentation as required. Ability to adapt to changing routes, schedules, weather conditions, and program needs.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS:
Frequently enter and exit a vehicle throughout the workday.
Regularly sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, push, pull, and carry items.
Lift and carry meal bags, coolers, insulated carriers, and other delivery supplies weighing up to 30 pounds.
Safely navigate stairs, sidewalks, ramps, driveways, and other surfaces while carrying meals.
Use hands and fingers to handle meal containers, delivery equipment, paperwork, and vehicle controls.
Safely operate a motor vehicle for extended periods.
Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, and icy conditions.
Travel between multiple residences and delivery locations throughout the assigned route.
Maintain awareness of surroundings and safely navigate unfamiliar or changing environments.
This position is primarily in person and includes significant time driving and making deliveries throughout the community. Work is performed in vehicles, participant residences and entryways, Active Generations facilities, and outdoor environments. Drivers may encounter varying weather, road, traffic, and property conditions. Schedules and routes may be adjusted based on participant needs, meal volume, staffing, weather, and program operations.

Reports to: Meals on Wheels Coordinator or designated Nutrition leadership.
