Every day, Mars, Incorporated factories takes thousands of decisions that are informed by rapid spectroscopy NIR data, some of which have the potential to have a significant consequence for our brands and business.

The rapid spectroscopy NIR program delivers over 10 million analysis results per annum steering production at 90% of Mars plants, as well as assessing raw material quality before use. The Near Infrared Senior Scientist is part of a team of technology experts responsible for the development, implementation, maintenance and continuous improvement of the rapid spectroscopy calibration portfolio for raw materials, intermediates and finished products across all Segments, and the governance of the instrument network through performance metrics.

What are we looking for?

  • You hold a BSc or Master degree in science (i.e. Chemistry, food science).
  • You have a background and proven record of Near Infrared Spectroscopy technology experience within chemometrics, spectroscopy or statistical analysis fields.
  • You have a minimum 2 years of experience working in an industrial or academic laboratory environment on applied NIR spectroscopy. Having worked in applications for food, feed, or agriculture industries is preferable.
  • Experience in Inline NIR technology or other rapid spectroscopy technologies such as X-Ray Fluorescence is highly desirable.
  • You are a great team player with strong customer focus.
  • You can easily adapt to the changing priorities.
  • You are fluent in English and communicate effectively.

What will be your key responsibilities?

  • Application & Procedure Development: create, validate, and deploy updated or new spectroscopy applications for quality control at all stages (inbound materials, in-process and finished goods).
  • Project Management: Execute complex development projects focused on new fit for purpose chemometric techniques, identifying new hardware/software when applicable, and improving support processes keeping in mind business needs.
  • Ensure effective communication with client groups of significant changes due to Rapid Spectroscopy model updates to the business, preventing disruption of local operations.
  • Consult on customer requests about rapid spectroscopy current and future capability, maintaining a high level of customer focus and ensure that projects are delivered on-plan, on-time, and on-budget.
  • Continuous Learning: Stay current with the latest advancements in spectroscopy and spectroscopy network by following news, reviewing scientific literature, and potentially attending conferences. Pragmatically able to translate state-of-the-art spectroscopic technologies into business needs and language.
  • Partnering with central and regional laboratory community to improve applications and ensure proper support to the business.
  • Take responsibility for the maintenance and day-to-day tasks of the Rapid Spectroscopy Laboratory.
