About the Team

It’s an exciting time in technology, and that buzz is felt throughout PetSmart! We are continuing to grow at a faster pace and we want to continue to provide best-in-class experiences for pets and pet parents.

Our Technology team has 6 different departments: Information Security, Service Delivery, Business Enabling Systems, eCommerce & Marketing Technology, Data and Stores, Services & Supply Chain.

Whether it’s online or in our stores, the work that the IT team does is instrumental in PetSmart’s success. We have a strategic and actionable plan underway and are looking for associates who are just as excited about it as we are.

About the Location

Collaborative Work Environment:
At PetSmart, teamwork and connection are core to how we thrive. This role is based at our Phoenix Home Office, with an expectation of working a minimum of four days in the office each week. In a standard work week, associates may work up to one remote “flex day” (with leader approval). Our hybrid approach is designed to foster strong collaboration while also supporting flexibility and individual success.

About the Job

The .NET Engineer develops, maintains, and enhances PetSmart’s custom applications and Point of Sales/Cash Register (POS) integrations, working on a mix of existing solutions and future capabilities. The role includes front-end development and responsibility for application uptime, reliability, security, and maintainability. This engineer partners with the SRE and other technology teams to deliver dependable applications and resolve production issues across the supported environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead analysis, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of custom C#/.NET applications and POS integrations, including workloads in GCP.
  • Develop and maintain application front ends and backend functionality, translating business needs into usable, maintainable solutions.
  • Enhance existing applications and build new solutions; address defects, technical debt, dependency updates, and supported runtime upgrades.
  • Own application-level diagnosis, code fixes, uptime, and reliability improvements; complete monitoring work identified by the SRE and collaborate on service recovery.
  • Develop and troubleshoot APIs, workers, services, and integrations, including GCP workloads using Kubernetes, Apigee, Cloud SQL, service mesh, Pub/Sub, and Gemini AI.
  • Support the team’s application landscape, which includes .NET web applications, React/JavaScript, Node.js services, SQL databases, and MongoDB.
  • Write and maintain automated tests, conduct code reviews, and establish application design and coding practices with the engineering team.
  • Review and approve releases with senior engineers; validate application quality, plan safe deployments and rollback procedures, and support POS lab testing.
  • Lead monitoring and observability across POS applications, integrations, store-device signals, cloud workloads, and vendor-hosted services; develop actionable dashboards and alerts.
  • Lead reliability practices, service health measurement, and coordination of recovery across systems.
  • Provide Level 3 incident response, coordinate technical diagnosis and recovery with internal teams and vendors, and communicate service impact and recovery progress.
  • Lead root cause analysis, identify recurring failure patterns, and drive corrective actions that prevent incidents and reduce operational risk.
  • Automate repetitive operational work and improve health checks, troubleshooting procedures, and incident runbooks.
  • Improve recovery readiness and identify monitoring work for application engineers; guide implementation and validate that resulting monitoring supports reliable operations.
  • Mentor associate engineers, document application behavior and dependencies, and share knowledge with analysts, engineers, and support partners.
  • Use ServiceNow as the primary incident management and ticketing system, and Jira and Confluence for project management, work tracking, and documentation.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience, with at least five years of C# software development experience.
  • Experience developing and maintaining C#/.NET web applications, including front-end functionality, APIs, and SQL databases.
  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or an equivalent cloud platform.
  • Experience troubleshooting production applications and improving uptime, performance, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Strong object-oriented programming, application design, automated testing, code review, and software development lifecycle skills.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance, collaborate across teams, and communicate clearly through technical documentation and incident updates.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with React or JavaScript, Node.js, MongoDB, and existing .NET Framework/MVC applications, and messaging platforms is highly desired.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with retail/POS systems.

Location and Work Schedule

This role is remote within Costa Rica. Primary working hours align with Mountain Standard Time (MST) in Phoenix, Arizona. On-site attendance is required as needed for POS lab testing and during visits by company vice presidents; there is no fixed on-site schedule.

Participation in a rotating on-call schedule is required, providing 24/7 coverage for one week, currently estimated at approximately once per month. Additional after-hours work may be required based on business needs. Opportunities to work voluntarily on holidays will be offered.

About Technology Operations

This role is part of Technology Operations, which keeps PetSmart’s systems within our area of responsibility reliable, available, and running efficiently so store and home office associates can do their work.

You will navigate ambiguity, balance competing priorities, and help teams move issues toward resolution. At times, you will lead discussions about unfamiliar systems or problems, ask focused questions, and coordinate internal teams and external partners with urgency. Restoring service may require occasional work outside regular hours, including evenings, weekends, and participation in the required on-call rotation.
