O26/27 TEMP/HRLY - ASL INTERPRETER

Posted Updated
Discussion

Arlington Public Schools is seeking an enthusiastic and qualified candidate to provide American Sign Language (ASL) and English interpreting services on an hourly, on-call basis in APS educational settings. Assignments are based on district needs and interpreter availability and qualifications. This position provides an entry pathway for interpreters who meet the minimum qualification threshold and are working toward the qualifications required for continued employment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide ASL and English interpreting in classrooms, IEP meetings, staff and department meetings, training sessions, and other assigned school activities.
  • Facilitate accurate and effective communication among students, families, teachers, staff, and other participants.
  • Prepare for assignments by reviewing relevant materials and educational terminology.
  • Maintain confidentiality, professional boundaries, and impartiality in accordance with the applicable RID Code of Professional Conduct and APS procedures.
  • Collaborate with teachers and staff to support communication access while maintaining the interpreter role.
  • Demonstrate dependability, flexibility, organization, and professional judgment.
  • Participate in interpreter training and professional development to strengthen skills and meet required qualification

Minimum Education Training and Experience Applicants must meet one of the following pathways in addition to the minimum interpreting qualifications:

  1. An associate’s degree that includes completion of an ASL Interpreter Training Program (ITP), or an equivalent combination of at least two years of postsecondary education, training, and experience that includes completion of an ASL ITP or a higher-level interpreter education program.
  2. Three years of progressively responsible experience providing ASL interpreting services, including at least two years providing educational interpreting services for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  3. An equivalent combination of post-high school education, interpreting experience, and training totaling at least five years. This option must include graduation from an ASL ITP or a higher-level interpreter education program, or an accepted credential specified under Required Qualifications for Continued Employment below. APS will evaluate the combination for equivalency to the education, training, and experience needed to perform the duties of the position.
  4. Meeting an education, training, or experience option does not substitute for the minimum interpreting qualifications required at hire.

Minimum Interpreting Qualifications (Provisional) Applicants must provide documentation of at least one of the following:

  • Valid Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level II/II, or
  • A passing score on the EIPA Written Test along with a minimum score of 3.0 on the EIPA Performance Test, or
  • An equivalent qualification from another state accepted under applicable Virginia requirements, provided it is recognized by the VDDHH as meeting or exceeding the VQAS Level II standard.

An ASL ITP diploma or interpreting experience alone does not replace the minimum interpreting qualification threshold.

Condition of Provisional Employment: Under state law, any individual hired with provisional status shall have exactly two (2) years from their official date of hire to successfully achieve the required VQAS Level III/III (or EIPA 3.5) credential. Failure to meet the state-mandated qualification within this two-year timeline will result in the inability to maintain employment in this role.

Required Qualifications for Continued Employment Interpreters hired below the required qualification level must obtain and submit documentation of at least one of the following within two years of the date of hire:

  • Valid VQAS Level III or higher.
  • EIPA Performance Test score of at least 3.5 and a passing score on the EIPA Written Test.
  • Current RID certification recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (VDDHH) as equivalent to or exceeding VQAS Level III.

Meeting this requirement is a condition of continued employment. An interpreter who fails to obtain and submit documentation of an accepted qualification by the two-year deadline will be removed from the on-call interpreter pool, and employment will be terminated in accordance with applicable APS personnel procedures. Hourly or intermittent service does not extend the two-year period measured from the date of hire. Interpreters who meet the required qualification level at hire must maintain the validity of their applicable credential throughout employment.

Compensation and Work Schedule This is an hourly, as-needed position compensated at $30.84 per hour. Work hours will be flexible and coordinated with administration.

Please Note: This position is not eligible for employee benefits. Employment is temporary in nature and is not guaranteed for any specific duration. Employment may end at any time based on operational and staffing needs.

Please Note: Arlington Public Schools receives a high volume of applications for many positions. As a result, only candidates who are identified as meeting the qualifications and whose experience and skills best align with the needs of the school, department, or office may be contacted for an interview. We appreciate the interest of all applicants; however, submission of an application does not guarantee an interview or individual contact regarding the status of an application.
