Accounting Manager
Position Summary
The Accounting Manager is a hands-on accounting professional responsible for overseeing core accounting activities, ensuring financial accuracy, strengthening accounting processes, and supporting the company’s continued growth. This role will play a key part in month-end close, accounts receivable/payable, cash activity, reconciliations, WIP accounting, cost accounting, and process improvement across multiple locations and entities.
The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting expertise, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to coach and teach others. This is a remote position open to candidates located within the Central Time Zone, with some travel required to company locations and future acquisitions.
This role is well suited for an experienced accountant who has had managerial exposure and enjoys providing guidance, teaching best practices, and improving processes.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting Operations & Weekly Review
- Conduct weekly reviews of accounts receivable, accounts payable, and cash activity, including soft bank reconciliations.
- Review transactions to ensure proper categorization, coding, and accounting treatment.
- Identify discrepancies, unusual activity, and potential accounting issues and ensure timely resolution.
- Review prepaids, fixed assets, accruals, and other balance sheet accounts for accuracy.
- Provide guidance to branch and local personnel on proper accounting procedures.
Month-End Close & Financial Accounting
- Lead and perform key month-end close activities to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
- Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Analyze account balances and variances and investigate unusual activity.
- Apply GAAP principles consistently across the organization.
- Support WIP (Work in Progress) accounting, cost accounting, and related financial analysis.
- Assist with consolidated reporting across multiple entities and locations.
Accounts Receivable & Accounts Payable
- Review AR and AP activities for accuracy, proper coding, and appropriate accounting treatment.
- Partner with branch-level AP/AR personnel to resolve issues and improve transaction accuracy.
- Identify recurring errors and provide coaching and training to prevent them.
- Support customer account reconciliations, vendor account resolution, and cash posting activities.
Coaching, Training & Collaboration
- Serve as a technical accounting resource for AP/AR clerks and branch personnel.
- Communicate accounting requirements in a clear, patient, and approachable manner.
- Build strong relationships with branch teams and help them understand the "why" behind accounting procedures.
Process Improvement & ERP Implementation
- Identify weaknesses, inefficiencies, and risks within current accounting processes.
- Recommend and implement improvements that increase accuracy, efficiency, and consistency.
- Document existing accounting processes and procedures.
- Help develop standardized processes across locations and entities.
- Support the company’s transition to a new ERP system, including process design, testing, implementation, and user adoption.
- Assist with automation and system enhancements where appropriate.
Acquisition Integration
- Assist with integrating newly acquired companies into the accounting function.
- Help standardize accounting practices, procedures, and reporting across acquired locations.
- Support accounting due diligence and transition activities as needed.
- Travel to acquired locations as necessary to assist with integration and training.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
- Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is a plus.
- Strong technical accounting knowledge and understanding of GAAP.
- QuickBooks experience
- NetSuite experience is a plus.
- WIP accounting experience is strongly preferred
- Experience with prepaids, fixed assets, accruals, and cost accounting.
- Experience with multi-location or multi-entity accounting preferred.
- Strong understanding of month-end close and financial reporting processes.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and effectively in a remote environment.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, growing organization and adapting to changing processes and systems.
