Optical Design & Development Engineer
Posted Updated
Description
We are looking for someone with a strong technical foundation, a hands-on approach to engineering and the curiosity to learn new technologies. You do not need to be an expert in every area; what matters is your ability to solve problems, learn quickly and take ownership of your work.
Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the optical design, analysis and development of optical systems and assemblies.
- Work on optical layouts, lens selection, optical performance evaluation, alignment and integration.
- Support the development of day-optics products, including reflex sights, red dot sights, magnifiers, scopes and binoculars.
- Use optical design and simulation tools to analyse performance and optimise designs, as applicable to the project.
- Develop prototypes and conduct optical testing, performance evaluation and design validation.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electronics and product engineering teams to develop integrated optical systems.
- Identify and evaluate optical components, materials, coatings and manufacturing technologies.
- Work with external vendors, manufacturing partners and testing facilities to support product development.
- Document designs, test results, technical specifications and engineering changes.
- Explore emerging optical technologies and contribute to Tactix's optical engineering roadmap.
- Gradually take on greater responsibility for projects, technical decisions and the development of optical engineering capabilities.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master's degree in Optical Engineering, Optics and Photonics, Applied Physics, Physics, Instrumentation, or a related engineering discipline.
- Approximately 4-7 years of relevant experience in optical design, optical systems, imaging, optomechanics, optical instrumentation or electro-optical product development.
- Practical exposure to optical design, optical testing, optical alignment or the development of optical instruments.
- Familiarity with optical design and simulation tools such as Zemax OpticStudio, CODE V or equivalent tools.
- Understanding of optical principles, image formation, aberrations, lens systems and optical performance parameters.
- Experience working with physical prototypes, troubleshooting technical issues and validating designs.
- A hands-on, analytical and methodical approach to engineering.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.
- A genuine interest in learning new technologies and developing products for demanding real-world applications.
- Experience in defence optics, weapon sights, surveillance systems, precision imaging, night vision or thermal imaging would be an advantage, but is not mandatory.
