Optical Engineer

An innovative international technology company, active in advanced imaging and high-precision equipment, is looking for an experienced Optical Engineer to strengthen its R&D team.

You will contribute to the development of high-end optical systems used in industrial production environments.

Work locations: West Flanders (Belgium) and Southwest Germany (with regular presence in Belgium required).

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop advanced optical systems in collaboration with project leaders, product managers, and a multidisciplinary R&D team
• Create and optimize optical designs using simulation tools (e.g. Zemax) and work closely with CAD engineers for mechanical integration
• Work with a wide range of optical components such as lenses, mirrors, fiber lasers, and LEDs
• Contribute to high-precision systems operating at (sub)micrometer level, in close collaboration with mechanical, electronic, and software teams
• Build and validate optical test setups, prototypes, and subassemblies, and ensure knowledge transfer towards production and service teams
• Support the sourcing and selection of specialized optical components together with procurement
• Drive continuous improvement of system performance based on feedback from production and field service
• Report to the R&D leadership team

Your profile

• Master’s degree in optics, photonics, applied physics, or equivalent through experience
• Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in optical system design
• Strong theoretical and practical understanding of optics; experience with optical design software (e.g. Zemax) is essential
• Programming skills (e.g. Matlab or similar) are a plus
• Hands-on, structured, and able to work both independently and in a team
• Creative problem solver with a multidisciplinary mindset
• Fluent in English; additional languages are a plus
• Stress-resistant, proactive, and motivated
