Painter

This position serves as a Painter within the Engineering Service at the Columbia VA Health Care System. The incumbent of this position works in the 2nd Shift Maintenance Shop and reports directly to the Supervisory Maintenance Mechanic. Second level supervision is performed by the Maintenance Control Manager. This position performs a full range of duties which includes determining the methods, techniques, devices, and materials that are best suited to the surface finish.

- The incumbent prepares area for painting or hanging by removing and/or protecting furnishings; installing drop cloths, masking tape, furniture covers, etc. - Applies coating material using any of the accepted trade devices including those designed to give special effects, for example, brushes, rollers, various types of spray guns and graining devices. - Ensures that the coating finish meets match, texture, decorative, thickness, and level requirements; hangs or repairs wall covering and border using acceptable trade techniques. - Applies special coating materials to produce marbling and graining. - Monitors supply usage and recommends procurement as needs arise. - Safeguards equipment and supplies and ensures proper use, cleaning and storage of each. Occasionally, he/she may handle materials and equipment that weighs 40 pounds and over. Incumbent is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Incumbent climbs ladders and reaches above head level to scrape, sand, putty and paint surfaces in cramped and hard-to-reach places. With assistance, the incumbent pulls a swing stage up as many as five floors, and frequently works from ladders, swing stages, and scaffolding.
