The position is organizationally under the Engineering Service at the James Mountain Inhofe VA Medical Center, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The purpose of the position is to perform as a Painter applying coating materials on wood, metal, glass, synthetic, concrete, and other surfaces for redecorating offices, wards, corridors, dining halls. living quarters, and outsourced buildings. This incumbent of the position reports to the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor and the Facility Manager Engineering Service.

Major duties include but are not limited to: The purpose of the position is to perform as a Painter applying coating materials on wood, metal, glass, synthetic, concrete. and other surfaces. The incumbent obtains fine agents, and mixes and applies pre-coating materials by thinning, toning, matching, blending, stirring and/or mixing coating materials. Determines, selects, and applies plaster materials/finishes (e.g. base, second coats, etc.), and insures proper materials are used to complete job requirements. The painter applies varied coating materials (e.g., paint, varnish, lacquer, shellac, resins, diverse structures, fittings, furnishings, items and/or surfaces (e.g.. wood, metal, glass. concrete, plaster. brick, etc.). Knowledge of plastering trade practices, methods. and techniques, Skill and ability to match, tint, tone and/or blend coating materials. Constructs molded plaster cornices and plaster, panels, trims, and attaches to walls. Work assignments are mode through work orders, trouble/service calls or maintenance schedules accomplished by rough sketches, building plans, engineering drawings/specifications, blueprints, other technical information or regulatory codes. When making signs, posters, displays for interior/exterior use the painter will use varied freehand and mechanical lettering graphic art techniques (this includes building and reflective traffic signs). The incumbent must have knowledge of standard surface preparation, coating methods, and techniques. Work is subject to spot checks during progress and/or upon completion for compliance with instructions or safety checks. The incumbent is expected to ensure surfaces are fully coated, protected, drip/run free, smooth or decoratively textured (i.e. lines, curves, patterns, etc..), and meets surface protection, color, texture, decorativeness, thickness and/or level requirements. Ability to read and follow directions that explain, for example, how to apply and use prepared solvents, thinner and stir coating materials. The incumbent is responsible for the use and safe keeping of tools, materials and equipment. Ability and skill in the use of tools and equipment of the trade such as scrapers, wire brushes, putty knives, sanders. paintbrushes. rollers, and spray guns. Occasionally, they may be required to handle materials and equipment that weigh 40 pounds or more. The incumbent removes debris and keeps work area clean and safe. Ability to remove scale, rust, dirt, and old paint from surfaces so that coating and pre-coating agent properly adheres. Skill in applying coating materials so surfaces are free from skips, runs, and/or drips. Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Painter/PD11728A Physical Requirements: Work requires continual movement of hands and arms, standing, reaching, bending, stooping, crawling, negotiating confined spaces, as well as frequent Iifting, carrying, and setting up materials and equipment that weigh up to 10 pounds. Occasionally, they may be required to handle materials and equipment that weigh 40 pounds or more. The painter prepares and coat surfaces from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms, and where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard to reach places. This requires them to stand, stoop, bend, kneel , climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Work Conditions: The work is done inside and outside, and dirt, spray, and fumes are usually present. The employee sometimes works outside in extreme weather conditions (i .e. snow, ice, wind, etc.). Occasionally, the employee may be required to wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable. The painter is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises and the possibility to broken bones.
