PARAMEDIC CAPTAIN

In addition to the General EMS duties outlined below, the Paramedic Captain is the shift supervisor. In this role, the Paramedic Captain is responsible for the supervision of all personnel acting within the system during that shift, and in this role will directly manage between two and twelve employees. He/she is responsible for planning the work of the shift, determining work techniques, and apportioning the work among employees. He/she will determine the equipment and materials needed for that work and ensure that the work meets any applicable regulatory standards while providing for a safety and security in the workplace.

General EMS duties: Emergency Medical Services personnel are responsible for all medical emergency care from the time they safely respond to and contact the victim(s) of trauma or illness, through transportation and expedient delivery to the care of a physician. They must therefore be able not only to appraise the extent of first aid rendered by others, but also to carry out those additional measures within their scope of practice to minimize morbidity and mortality. They must operate emergency vehicles safely and efficiently; maintain communication between the scene of the emergency, traffic authorities, dispatchers, and emergency departments. They will render necessary additional care en route; and transmit records and reports to medical and other authorities. EMS personnel will perform other tasks as assigned to assist in the smooth operation of the department.

Education: Successful completion of a Paramedic Education Program that meets or exceeds the requirements set forth by the USDOT. High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Must be at least 18 years of age. Two years of experience as an EMT-Basic is required. One year of experience as an EMT Intermediate or Paramedic is preferred. Previous experience in a leadership or supervisory role is preferred. The ability to efficiently communicate verbally, via telephone and radio equipment; ability to lift, carry and balance up to 125 pounds (250 with assistance); ability to interpret written, oral and diagnostic instructions; ability to use good judgment and remain calm in high-stress situations; ability to work effectively in an environment with frequent auditory and visual interference; ability to function efficiently throughout an entire work shift; ability to calculate weight, volumes and ratios as well as read small print, all under threatening time constraints. The ability to read and understand English language manuals and road maps; accurately discern street signs and address numbers; ability to interview patient, family members, and bystanders; ability to document, in writing, all relevant information in prescribed format in light of legal ramifications of such; ability to converse in English with coworkers and hospital staff as to status and care of the patients. Good manual dexterity, with ability to perform all tasks related to the highest level of patient care. Ability to bend, stoop, and crawl on uneven terrain and rugged surfaces; and the ability to withstand varied environmental conditions such as extreme heat, cold, and moisture. Ability to work in low light, confined spaces and other dangerous environments.

Licenses/Certification: Valid Colorado state Driver's license free from restrictions and suspensions. Valid Colorado State Paramedic certification required. National Registry Paramedic certification preferred. Also required*, current Basic Life Support-AHA Healthcare Provider (or the equivalent), AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (or equivalent), and AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (or equivalent). Preferred: International Trauma Life Support (or equivalent), Neonatal Resuscitation Provider, Advanced Medical Life Support, and Instructorships in AHA CPR, First Aid, ACLS and PALS.

Responsibilities:

  • The Paramedic Captain will participate and provide input in the interviewing and selection of employees. He/she will provide input on decisions regarding the job status of other employees. He/she will appraise the productivity of, handle employee grievances and complaints from, and suggest to the EMS Operations Supervisor appropriate disciplinary actions involving other employees if necessary.
  • The Paramedic Captain will answer questions from EMS employees, the public, and other hospital departments that are directed to the person “in charge”. He/she will have the authority to make those decisions on a daily basis. In doing so, communication must be maintained with the EMS Operations Supervisor and the other Paramedic Captains to ensure consistency and appropriateness
  • Maintain certifications and classes required by level of certification
  • Maintain assigned equipment in a good state of repair and operational condition

Compensation: $0.00/hr, depending on experience.
