The Department of African American Studies at Syracuse University seeks a part-time instructor to teach “African American Literature to 1900: An Introduction” at the undergraduate level in the Fall 2026 semester with the start date of August 17, 2026.

The course meeting day/time is scheduled for Wednesday, from 8:00 am to 9:20 am, with an in-person format on the SU Campus.

AAS 231: African American Literature to 1900: An Introduction (3 credits)

The course introduces African American literature extending from Africa to the Americas and spanning slavery, Reconstruction, and the era of Racial Uplift. It includes autobiography, fiction, and poetry by such authors as Wheatley, Douglass, Jacobs, Webb, Hopkins, Dunbar, Chesnutt, and Du Bois.

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined based on their per-credit-rate-history within the hiring department.
