Payload Engineer for IRIS²

We are looking for a ​Payload Engineer​ on behalf of and in support to our client for their location in ​Arganda del Rey (Madrid), Spain​.

As part of the SpaceRISE consortium, our client plays a central role in the IRIS² programme, leading the design, development and implementation of the ground segment, including the infrastructure needed to manage the constellation and connect it with terrestrial networks. The company is also responsible for service operations, such as defining the service catalogue, establishing procedures and developing delivery models for member states.

In addition, our client leads the Low LEO segment, supporting innovative missions that strengthen the European space ecosystem. To meet its growing responsibilities, the company is progressively building a dedicated IRIS² team, currently composed of more than 40 professionals.

This role requires relocation and on-site presence at the Satellite Control Centre in Arganda del Rey (Madrid).

Please note, the successful candidate will be employed by ATG Europe (or one of its subsidiaries). Furthermore, upon selection, they will be subject to a general security screening performed by an external provider (further information will be provided at interview stage).

The successful candidate will be tasked with, but not limited to:

  • Support the definition, design, development and oversight of a telecommunications satellite constellation program in the area of Repeater and Antennas (Payload);

  • Support the definition, design and development of telecommunications systems based on satellite technology;

  • Participate in Satellite Mission Definition activities, system specification definition and contract negotiations;

  • Prepare and participate in payload unit, subsystem and system design, manufacturing and testing review meetings;

  • Follow up and review payload design, development, manufacturing and testing at unit, subsystem and system levels;

  • Prepare and participate in satellite launch campaigns;

  • Prepare and participate in satellite In Orbit Test Campaigns;

  • Support Payload on-orbit health status follow-up;

  • Prepare weekly reports of activities.

  • Master’s Degree in Telecommunication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or similar;

  • At least 10 years of experience on a similar position with hands-on experience or exposure in either payload procurement, payload equipment manufacturing or payload in-orbit operations in GEO and/or LEO;

  • Experience in managing large EU and ESA projects;

  • Programming languages skills (Python, Matlab or similar);

  • Expertise in RF and microwave engineering, including analog signal chain design, high-power amplification, frequency conversion, filtering and RF chain technologies;

  • Strong competences in Digital Signal Processing (DSP), Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) technology, active antenna, on-board digital processors, software-defined radio payloads and 5G standard;

  • Experience with constellation design;

  • Experience with Optical equipment;

  • Experience with Link budgets;

  • Experience with repeater RF performance measurement;

  • Experience with integration and testing: equipment, subsystem and system levels;

  • Experience with In Orbit testing;

  • Experience with quality control essentials;

  • Basic knowledge of satellite platform engineering principles;

  • Willing and able to travel for business needs as required to various locations such as ESA ESTEC, European Commission, Manufacturer facilities and Launch Base;

  • Candidates must be eligible to live and work in the EU;

  • Candidates must have or be eligible to obtain Personal Security Clearance (PSC) up to ESA SECRET / EU SECRET;

  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken;

  • Any other European language is considered an asset.
