POSITION: Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS)
DEPARTMENT: Outpatient Services, Recovery Support
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
SUPERVISOR: Chief Programs Officer
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-Time
SHIFT: 40 Hour Per Week


SUMMARY: A Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) assists clients in facilitating access to needed services, provides support and encouragement while assisting clients in the recovery process.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Obtain and complete the State of Texas approved 46-hour PRC training within 6 months of hire.
  • Obtain the Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) credential by completing 500 hours of relevant experience within 6 months of employment with Nexus.
  • Model appropriate and effective coping and self-help recovery skills.
  • Provide strong peer recovery leadership.
  • Guide and mentor individuals seeking to achieve or sustain long-term recovery from addiction, regardless of pathway to recovery.
  • Maintain personal recovery evidenced by remaining 100% abstinent from all mood altering and mind changing substances.
  • Assist clients in developing their own recovery plan and its implementation.
  • Provide case management related functions such as providing referrals, scheduling appointments, shopping, budgeting, using public transportation, and meeting attendance.
  • Provide transportation as assigned to ensure client access to meetings and community services.
  • Plan and implement recovery activities and events.
  • Attend court appointments with clients to act as a support/advocate.
  • Assist clients in accessing community services, as indicated.
  • Conduct active outreach efforts to encourage attendance and participation in recovery-oriented, self-help, and pro-social groups.
  • Provide supportive services during times of client crisis/relapse.
  • Teach personal care, self-help, and relapse prevention skills to clients.
  • Attend required trainings for the position.
  • Attend monthly All Staff meeting.
  • Perform various clerical tasks, filing, copying, documentation, etc.
  • Ensure services delivered as in line with the Nexus Mission and Values.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

  • Basic computer skills and knowledge.
  • Organizational skills and ability to prioritize work.
  • Understanding of and adherence to HIPAA Compliance, and Employee & Client Confidentiality.
